"Ame…" Rita breathed softly, only able to manage her sister's nickname.
"Ame…" Rita breathed softly, only able to manage her sister's nickname.
Amelia stood up and tried to run towards Rita, screaming. Peter dropped down behind Amelia and restrained her.
"Ame…" Rita repeated.
Amelia struggled against Peter, still screaming.
"Ame," Rita said faintly, but still loud enough for both of them to hear.
Unable to hear Rita over Amelia's screams, Amelia gave up. She turned around and started to sob into Peter's chest.
Rita's arm shifted. With her last bits of strength, Rita spoke as loud as she could: "Amelia!"
Amelia heard Rita's mild call and ran over.
Rita smiled a little. Her face was very pale. "Hey, sis."
"Rita, don't you die on me. I need you."
“I kinda… have a… bullet in… my side…” she replied, her words slow so that they could be clearer. “Might be… a little hard… to fix.”
"And who are you speaking to?" Amelia asked softly. She started to get to work on Rita's wound, which very slowly started to heal.
“What?” Even if Rita has understood, her vision was so spotted and blurred that she wouldn’t have been able to tell anyway.
"Reality manipulation, remember? I can heal you only part way, then you'll have to go to hospital."
"No… time…" she breathed.
"There is always time, sister."
Rita shook her head, but that sent ripples of pain down her body. She gritted her teeth and hissed.
Amelia kept working on Rita's wound. She reached one hand over and hovered it above Rita's head and tried to ease her pain.
Rita knew it was hopeless. "Ame… stop…"
"Rita, stop arguing. I know what I'm doing. You don't know it, but I made a vow to mum and dad on their deathbed that I would always protect you."
Rita was breathing heavily. "Really?"
"What did you expect? That I would leave you to die? You're my only family left, Rita."
Rita mustered up a painful-looking smile. She winced and reached up to touch her sister's face. "I don't know… what I… would do… without you… Ame."
"I know what you'd do," Amelia said.
