Jane continued to try, but her lungs wouldn't listen.
Jane continued to try, but her lungs wouldn't listen.
"Is she okay?" John asked fearfully. Chadine simply hushed the desperate husband.
Slowly, the pain subsided. Jane knew it would be back soon, so she took the opportunity to even out her breathing.
"Are you okay, love?" John took the liberty to approach, scooping up Jane's trembling hand.
"Not particularly," she breathed, a smile working onto her face.
He leaned in and kissed her face, "You're such a strong, beautiful woman.."
"Could you choose to compliment me when I am not birthing our child?" She tried to keep a straight face, but visibly melted after he kissed her.
"Hah–! I'm, just nervous," John replied shakily. "I'm not used to seeing you in so much pain,"
She shook her head, a subtle smile on her lips. "Then you might not want to stay."
"But I want to be here for you, at the same time," he sputtered nervously.
"Then stay. Do whatever you want, John," she said softly.
He kissed her face again, "Can I get you anything..?"
"No," she answered before another contraction hit. She squeezed her eyes shut, gritted her teeth, and tried not to squeeze John's hand too tightly. This was the worse one yet.
John exhaled nervous stutters, while Chadine moved to prepare for the infant's arrival.
Jane moaned loudly. "Chadine… I'm hungry…"
"Tell that to your husband, love." Chadine replied in a breath. John was gone in a flash to fetch his wife a snack.
She smiled faintly. Her love for him was what kept her going through the endeavor.
"I—i can see 'em, now, Jane, push!" Chadine encouraged her.
She did as best she could. A scream came from her lips.
It'd feel like an eternity to Jane, one of debilitating pain. But to Chadine, it was over in an instant—Jane could hear her child's outcry break through the painful fog. There.. she was done. She was a mother now.
She breathed a faint sigh of relief and smiled weakly.
Chadine's brows stayed furrowed– she simply swaddled the child, and laid the baby in her mother's arms, still wet and attached to his mother with the cord. A boy.. an infant boy, her son.
John came back, triumphantly holding an apple– til he realized he just missed the birth of his first child by a hair.
Jane looked up, holding her son against her chest protectively. "John…" she whispered happily.
He blinked a few times, expression going slack with a flood of emotion. "Oh.. oh. Jane," he breathed and rushed forward. Not too fast though, both nervous and overjoyed. Their son's cries kept pulling on strong and almost deafening; good lungs on this kid. Chadine watched from the foot of the bed with a smile.
Jane gently rocked her baby. "Shh… quiet down, love. You're alright now." She looked up excitedly to John. "What should we name him?"
