"You could've cost me my job," John exhaled harshly. He wiped his hair off his forehead, and headed towards his office with stiff limbs. He always went there to cool off or think things through.

"Race me," Marius dared with a glitter in his wheat-golden eyes.
"Definitely. You're losing this one, mon ami." Louis gave a wolfish grin and rose to his feet.
"Bet," Marius laughed, "I chase sheep all day long! You count us off,"
“Race back to the barn?” Louis walked over to Marius, standing in line with him.
"Yea," Marius grinned.
"Alright…." Louis cracked his knuckles. "Three… Two… One… Go!"
Marius burst off in a run. His skinny legs flew across the grass, bare feet sending cracked stalks of golden grass flying in his wake. His hair flew up behind him like a golden sail.
Louis tore after him, his strong legs powering him forward until he was running right next to the other man.

Jane looked worriedly at Peter, who'd stood up at John's abrupt departure. "I'll check on him," he said softly, following his footsteps. Jane stood alone in the foyer with her thoughts. Sharp, painful memories slit through her vision.
John dropped himself in the desk chair, bringing his hands up to his face to rub in slow, reflective motions. He hated being upset towards her–but this.. it rubbed him the wrong way.

Marius exhaled a bout of heaving laughter, making his step falter.

Peter knocked on the doorframe. "John?"
Jane leaned against the wall and closed her eyes. Her breath began to come more and more rapidly.
"Yes?" The man replied, drawing a deep breath to soothe himself.
"Can I come in?" Peter asked, leaning against the frame.
Jane slid down the wall and tried desperately to catch her breath.

Louis seized the chance and sped ahead, only by a few steps, but still by enough.

"Yeah, sure.." John grunted back.

Marius lurched, and grasped at Louis's sleeve, grinning widely.

Peter walked in and stood in front of John's desk. "You shouldn't be too hard on her, you know," he remarked, looking around the room.
"What do you expect from me?" John replied exasperatedly, "I'm one of the most accomodating husbands on this continent, and I'm not allowed to get upset once?" He gestured stiffly, cheeks getting flustered. "Some men beat their wives!"
Marius lurched, and grasped at Louis's sleeve, grinning widely.
"Hey!" he protested, stumbling a little and looking back in surprise.
Marius began to reply, but tripped and brought Louis down with him.
They both tumbled to the ground like young boys, the weight of Louis pulling them both into a slow roll until they came to a stop with Marius practically straddling his middle.
Marius heaved his breaths, looking down at Louis with a flushed face and a huge smile.

Peter arched his eyebrows. "She was only trying to protect you. She just wants the best for you, and you know it, John. Did you see how Simcoe made her turn from bold to timid in a heartbeat?"
Marius heaved his breaths, looking down at Louis with a flushed face and a huge smile.
Louis panted heavily, staring up at Marius with a wide-eyed, danced expression.

"That man has always had issues. If we got skeptical with every comment he made, nothing would get done," John defended. "Besides, she knew to watch herself– she even promised me beforehand she would. I have every right to feel upset,"
Marius heaved his breaths, looking down at Louis with a flushed face and a huge smile.

"Hey," Marius laughed boyishly.
