April blinked rapidly, raised his weak hand to her lips. “I’m here, Cruz, I’m here…” she murmured, her heart breaking into two. To Edonine, she said “When will he be off the drug?”

"I don't know yet," she replied quietly. "I suppose we'll… test it out next week, try to keep.. keep him calm upon waking,"
Cruz's eyebrows lifted slightly. "April…"
April’s eyes snapped to his face the moment he said her name. She bowed her head, leaning forward to press a kiss to his cheek.
"I can't see," he murmured in a subdued tone, delirious, perhaps for the better. "I can't.. see you," the Spaniard struggled to grasp why.
“I know,” she whispered, “I know.” She did not shy away from his sewn eyelids, did not look away from the swollen mess.
"Do you think you can drink some water?" Edonine asked the man.
Cruz furrowed his eyebrows, and didn't answer.
“Cruz?” she prompted gently. “Do you want any water?”
He licked his dry lips, and nodded slowly.
Pierre spoke up for the first time since April had arrived. “I’ll get it.” He moved towards the small kitchen, otherwise silent.
"Louis was captured with him," Edonine spoke quietly, "Nearly the whole camp as well…"
April tore her eyes away from her beloved and fixed them on the figure of a boy who looked much too young to be fighting. “Oh…”
Francis glanced sideways, shifted his weight. "Pierre says he was blue when he found him. From the cold. He's lucky,"
“He is,” she said shortly, falling silent. After a pause, she dared to speak again. “I don’t think we’ve met, I’m April.”
"Francis," Edonine replied, scratching her cheek.
Cruz tried opening his eyelids, and started to panic when they refused to open.
April turned immediately back to him, lifting a hand to gently smooth his eyelids back down. “Shh.. it’s okay. Breathe, my love.”
"Oh, I need to get his medicine," Edonine breathed with a sensation of shame, scolding herself—she needed to keep better track of this.
He reached out for her arm to grasp, both to ground himself and make sure she was really there. Cruz began to choke on a sob, but his tears drained directly through his nose down his lip.
(Fun fact! The way that lacrimal (tear) ducts work, they excrete from the far edge, the corner by your nose, and it all empties into your nose. Thats why you get snotty when you cry. So for cruz, his tears would just collect in his eyesockets and go into his nose, instead of down his cheeks)
(Aww poor guy)
April rubbed his arm. Just then, Pierre returned with a glass of water. “Help him sit.”
"I gotta get his medicine," Edonine replied, the glass bottle in hand while she came back to Cruz's bedside. "Else he'll choke on it,"
John slept on his side, ended up facing away from her because he got hot sometime in the night and retreated to the cooler side of the bed.
Jane rolled over and snuggled against his back. "Good morning…"
John inhaled slowly, then let it all out in a massive yawn. "Goodmorning, Mrs. André," he replied just as softly, but no less of a grin.

Pierre and April nodded in unison, and April slid an arm beneath his shoulders and eased him up.
"Nn– nnahh–" Cruz gasped in revolt, Edonine had to kind of grasp his hair to hold his head in place, keep the medicine from spilling all over. To him, it was like the soldier had shoved him still. Absolutely terrifying.
"Come on, Cruz!" Edonine exhaled with frustration, and finally got the medicine down his throat.

She grinned and wrapped her arms around his neck from behind. "Did you sleep alright?"

April squeezed her eyes shut for a moment, hands shaking as she tried to take in this new reality.
Cruz breathed in heavy just a few more times, and finally the medicine made him sleep.
Edonine was quiet for a long time. She just felt pain, for this poor woman. What was to become of them now..?
