Eden’s POV:
I lifted my head up curiously.
“When did you… start liking me?”
Eden’s POV:
I lifted my head up curiously.
“When did you… start liking me?”
Sterling's POV:
I cleared my throat, turning away as I felt my cheeks heat up. "Well… I'm not sure, exactly… I just know that I've seen you all these years, but I never got up the courage to actually do anything about it. Until a few weeks ago, when I asked you out, that is…" I explained softly.
Eden’s POV:
My lips twisted into a small smile.
“Was I really that scary?” I mused, fingers playing with the buttons on Sterling’s shirt.
Sterling's POV:
I watched her for a moment. It was cute how she just did small things that showed her affection or attraction like that. I liked it quite a bit, actually…
"Scary? No, not scary… Not really. I just… didn't know how to approach you," I said, shrugging a bit as I looked down at her softly.
Eden’s POV:
“I’m glad you gathered the courage to ask me out back then,” I replied softly, feeling his powerful gaze on me. “And I’m glad I gave you that challenge.”
Sterling's POV:
"You have given me that challenge and more," I chuckled, winking at her suggestively. I was teasing her, of course, but that didn't mean it wasn't totally true…
Eden’s POV:
I face burned and I was glad Sterling couldn’t see it. I simply punched his arm lightly.
“You are such a tease…” I grumbled.
Sterling's POV:
I chuckled again, catching her hand before she could pull it away. Holding onto it, I pressed a soft kiss to the back, and then to the palm. "So… I suppose I should ask you what color you're wearing to prom, then, huh?"
Eden’s POV:
“I don’t know,” I answered, shrugging, squeezing Sterling’s hand. “To be honest, I’ve never been to any party before.”
Sterling's POV:
I blinked at her, surprised. Prom was only a few days away…
"Don't you have a dress yet?" I wondered. Surely Ashley would have made sure of it…
Eden’s POV:
I only rolled my eyes.
“I didn’t think I’d be attending prom this year,” I answered, shrugging. “You roped Lee and Luke into this. I’m sure she has a dress prepared. I wouldn’t put it past her.”
Sterling's POV:
I chuckled a bit and bent down to press a swift kiss to her lips. "Then I'll check with her. For now… I believe I promised you dessert?" I said, raising an eyebrow at her as I smirked.
Eden’s POV:
“I would like a donut, yes,” I nodded, pretending his words hadn’t affected me even a little bit.
(Skip?)
(Lol, Eden.
Sure. To when?)
(No idea)
(Hm… Prom?)
(Sounds good. Can you start?)
(Oof. Sure. Lol.)
Sterling's POV:
I fidgeted with my tie for the millionth time that night, earning a light chuckle from my mother, who stood in the doorway to my bedroom as she watched me finish getting ready. I glanced over at her, seeing a lock her dark hair falling out of its immaculate ponytail and into her face as she stood there, leaning against the doorframe with arms crossed over her chest and just looking rather amused. And proud, if I interpreted that glimmer in her eyes correctly.
"Look at you… My boy is all grown up. This girl must be really special to you if you're so nervous about this," she said, pushing off the door and waking over to me. She reached over to adjust my tie a bit, then patted my chest. "You look wonderful, Sterling. Don't forget the corsage foe Eden."
I smiled down at her gently. I had passed her up in sixth grade and now towered over her. The height came from my father, who I was nearly taller than. "Thanks, mom. That means a lot to me," I said softly, wrapping my arms around her in a hug that she tightly returned. After a moment, we pulled apart, she kissed my forehead, and I headed out to get Eden.
Ashley's POV:
Tonight was going to be one of the most important nights of my life. And I had forgotten to do my hair.
Of course, the one thing that would take the longest was the thing I forgot… Why did it have to be tonight?
I groaned as I rifled through my things, looking for something – anything – I could do with my hair. I was just about to give up when my mother's voice broke into my raging thoughts.
"Ashley… I have something for you," she said, taking a step into my room. In her hand she held the most beautiful headband I had ever seen. It was studded with silver, white, and clear beads and jewels, and it would wrap around my head, rather than just resting in the top.
"I wore this in my wedding, and I thought it would look perfect with your dress," she mentioned softly as she pulled my hair back and adjusted it around the accessory.
When she was finished, I glanced in the mirror and grinned. She was right, as usual. The silver and white went perfectly with my light pink dress, with its ballgown skirt and sweetheart bodice.
"Wow… Thank you, Mama… This is perfect," I breathed, looking over my reflection one last time before I turned and hugged her. "And I have the perfect shows to go with it!"
A pair of silver, strappy heels were pulled out of my closet, and I quickly slipped them on. There. Now the look was finished.
"Oh, Lucas should be here any minute, now! It's a good thing we finished when we did," my mom mused.
Eden’s POV:
Looking into the mirror… I didn’t feel like myself. I’d only ever worn shirts and the likes. I don’t remember a time I ever wore such dresses—except for when I was a baby, but those times didn’t count. Even during those parties my dad took us to, I hardly ever wore dresses like these. I wore business outfits. No one minded me wearing such clothing. It wasn’t as if I was the heir to the McArthur company.
Looking at myself into the mirror, I noticed how different I looked. The burgundy and black dress seemed to bring out my figure, but what I felt most uncomfortable with was the neckline. It was too wide for me and I really wanted to throw on a jacket, but I restrained myself from doing so. It was prom, so I needed to dress like it. The dress was already simple enough. I could do with simple. It just so happened that simple came along with a sleeveless dress and a wide neckline.
Finally, I stopped staring at myself in the mirror and worrying about myself. Although I didn’t decorate my face with makeup, I deduced I looked decent enough to go to prom. I didn’t make a proper hairstyle—I simply left my hair open, not doing anything extravagant. Once I looked at myself again, I reached out for my shoes.
Ironically, although I don’t have much experience wearing dresses, I was very much familiar with heels. There were some formal outfits I wore which required me to wear heels. My red pumps were simple as well, but looked pretty enough.
“Well, it’s not like you could look any worse,” I muttered to myself before shrugging. All I wanted to do was impress Sterling. Make him speechless when he saw me. That was when someone knocked on my door, poked his head in. Within seconds, Lucas’s face twisted into a look that belonged in a horror movie.
Lucas’s POV:
I furrowed my eyebrows as I tried to work my tie. It wasn’t that I couldn’t tie a tie. I could, but it just wasn’t working for me right now. I sighed in frustration. Sometimes, things seemed to hate me.
It was then that I heard a chuckle.
I turned back to see my dad in the doorway, shaking his head as he chuckled.
“Having some trouble there, son?”
I immediately straightened my back, trying to give off an unbothered look but failing. Dad merely smiled in amusement and walked over to me, fixing my tie for me.
“Eden still getting ready?” I nodded.
“I’m genuinely worried about her choices,” I admitted. Dad laughed. “You know how she is. I’m going to check on her to see if she’s actually ready.”
I knocked on Eden’s door before poking my head in, hoping to see she’d at least tried. She didn’t. I felt horrified.
Now, the dress choice was good. It fit her. But she wasn’t prom ready.
“Why… aren’t you wearing any makeup? Why is your hair like that? Where in the world is all of your jewelry?” I immediately blurted out but didn’t wait for a reply as I marched towards her drawers and took out all of her abandoned makeup that I found. I forced her to sit, despite her complains.
Okay, I never wore makeup myself, but Kris wasn’t just my manager. He had to cater to others as well when he was free, and I’d watched him so many times, assisted him even, that I could put on makeup nicely.
When I was done with Eden’s face, I was satisfied. The red lipstick looked excellent on her, and the eyeliner made her blue eyes pop out. I didn’t do too much on her. Just a light makeup, but enough to make her features stand out more.
Eden looked irritated, but I felt satisfied. I fixed her hair a little, too. I simply added a few curls to it and let it rest. It looked better when it was open.
“Well, it seems you don’t need the jewelry anymore,” I smiled. Eden huffed but didn’t say anything.
“Anywa, I’m going to go pick up Ash,” I told her. “Sterling will pick you up, right?”
She nodded.
“Great. See you at the party, sis,”
She nodded again.
I bid my parents goodbye and left feeling anxious. I couldn’t wait to see Ashley.
Sterling’s POV:
This is it… You open that door and you are officially going to prom, I reminded myself as I sat in the driveway of the McArthur estate. As soon as I stepped outside, I was Eden’s date.
Now that was a reassuring thought. With Eden by my side, I was sure I could do anything, take on any problem, climb any mountain… She just did that to me. Somehow, I was both a nervous wreck and completely confident when I was around her. I had no idea how that was even possible, but apparently it was.
So, with as much confidence as I could, I finally stepped out of my car and up to the door. I took a deep breath before knocking twice, then clasped my hands behind me, holding tightly onto the corsage.
Ashley’s POV:
“Oh my gosh… I hope he likes the dress. He has to like it. I’m sure he’ll love it… Yeah. Yeah, he’ll love it. Of course he will,” I muttered to myself as I paced my room, anxiously anticipating Lucas’ arrival.
After a few minutes of murmuring to myself and pacing my room — was that divot there before? — the doorbell finally rang. I raced to the door, but my mom and dad had already beat me to it. Mama gave me an encouraging smile and shooed me back up the stairs, where I waited as she opened the door.
“Lucas! You look great. Why don’t you step inside? Ashley is just about to come down,” she greeted him warmly, stepping aside for him to come in. Once the door was closed, she glanced over at me, and I started to slowly make my way down the stairs.
Eden's POV:
"You look beautiful," dad said softly, kissing the top of my head. "When did you grow up so fast? I remember you being little and always running after your mother."
I laughed.
"I also remember throwing a tantrum whenever you had to work all night," I said with a chuckle. "Lucas was a calm child. I was the aggressive one."
"You still are," dad remarked cheekily and I responded by punching him on the shoulder lightly. My dad and I had this sort of relationship. Once, when I had first gotten my period, I freaked out and went to my parents. My dad, with the most serious expression ever, told me, 'the elder gods demand tribute.' Needless to say, my mother was horrified.
Dad told me a few jokes, trying to ease my nerves. I don't know how he could tell I was nervous, but I didn't complain. I knew I needed his humor.
"Wait, before I forget," Dad muttered, digging in his pocket to retrieve a small black box. I raised an eyebrow. He told me to turn around, and within a second, I felt something cool press against my neck. I touched it with my fingers, feeling the smooth surface of the necklace. I immediately turned towards the mirror on the wall. The necklace had a silver chain with a crimson crystal. It was simple but it looked beautiful. "I told your grandfather you were going to your first prom. He immediately sent me this."
Before I could reply, someone knocked on the door. My dad gave me a sly smirk before he pulled on a serious expression, walking over to open the door.
I couldn't stop him in time as he opened the door and greeted my boyfriend.
"Good evening, Sterling," my dad greeted Sterling softly, his figure blocking my view. I didn't expect him to act like this, but it wasn't a surprise. He'd met Sterling before. Perhaps he knew Sterling wasn't a terrible guy. Or perhaps my dad was far too chill. "It's nice to finally meet the man who has been making my daughter look her sleep."
I scowled.
Lucas's POV:
I greeted Aunt Willow as politely as I could, with me shaking and all. I slowly walked into the living room, too nervous to sit down so I waited for Ashley while standing.
When she did come down, however, I felt like someone punched me in the face. In a good way.
She looked beautiful. Words couldn't describe what I felt seeing her in that dress, the shy smile on her features, yet the confident steps she took as she neared me. I wanted to pull her towards me immediately, kiss her and tell her she looked breathless, but I showed restraint. I could do that in the car, but it was another thing doing it in front of her mother.
"Ash…" I whispered, my mind growing blank. "You… you look… You look amazing…"
(You did it! I can't believe you actually used that prompt! Oh my gosh, I am totally dying of laughter on the inside!!!!!)
Sterling's POV:
I gave Mr. McArthur a polite smile, sticking my hand out to shake his. "Mr. McArthur, it's a pleasure to see you," I greeted him, unable to keep myself from trying to glance around him a few times to see if I could spot Eden. "How are you and your wife? And Eden?"
Ashley's POV:
I couldn't help the blush that rose to my cheeks when I saw the way Lucas was looking at me. I sucked my head, not wanting him to see my flaming cheeks.
But, gosh… He looked amazing in his suit. I had seen him in suits before, having been invited to a few events where it would have been required, but this was different. This time, he was dressing like this for me… And I loved it.
"You look really good, too, babe," I said softly, finally daring to look up at him with a small smile.
(I did!! I was waiting to use that for a long time! 🤣🤣🤣)
Eden’s POV:
Hearing Sterling’s voice made me want to hide in my room. This would be the first time he’d see me dressed up like this and it was nerve-wrecking.
Before my dad could respond, I grabbed his arms and pocked my poked my head from behind him, my lips pursed together in nervousness.
“Mom’s good,” I replied shakily instead of my dad who shot me an amused look. “So am I. Hi.”
Lucas’s POV:
It was official. Aside from my mother, of course, Ashley was the most beautiful woman I’d ever seen. And that beautiful woman was my girlfriend. Mine, when she could have someone else.
“Um,” I looked away, rubbing the back of my head nervously. I couldn’t be sure if I could keep myself from kissing her right there and then. “You ready… to go?”
(Lol. I loved it. Thank you for that. Gosh…)
Sterling's POV:
My gaze softened at the sight of my girlfriend's face. She looked beautiful… Breathtaking, even though all I could see was her face.
"Hey, E. You look… Wow… And I haven't even seen your dress yet," I chuckled nervously.
Ashley's POV:
"Wait, wait! I've gotta get some pictures of you two. So just stand together and pretend you like each other," my mom joked with a grin as she pulled her phone out.
I sighed and stepped closer to Lucas. "I'm sorry about her… You know how she gets about this kind of thing," I murmured in his ear.
After a few rounds of pictures, she finally let us go. I turned to face Lucas, grinning at him.
"Let's go before she changes her mind," I chuckled, taking his hand.
(You’re welcome xD)
Eden’s POV:
I squeezed my dad’s arms tighter as my heart pounded in my chest.
“Thank you, Ry,” I murmured softly, a smile on my features. “You look great, too…”
It was my first time seeing Sterling in that type of a dress, and to say that I was shook would be another statement.
He looked incredibly neat and polished yet his eyes looked dangerous as they looked at me.
“Listen, I don’t want to do this, but Eden’s mother would kill me if I didn’t,” Dad said, sighing as he fished out his phone. “So I’d appreciate it if you let me snap a couple of your pictures.”
Lucas’s POV:
After a few minutes, we got out of Ashley’s house. The second we reached my car, I immediately pulled Ashley towards me and kissed her softly, her face cupped in my hands gently. I wanted to show her how she looked to me, and at the same time I wanted to make sure I didn’t mess up her makeup before we even got to the party.
