Eden's POV:
I raised my eyebrow before shrugging.
"It was good," I answered. "What about you? You've been out of it lately. You barely finished your food."
Eden's POV:
I raised my eyebrow before shrugging.
"It was good," I answered. "What about you? You've been out of it lately. You barely finished your food."
Sterling’s POV:
I glanced down at my plate and noticed that she was right: I’d barely touched it.
With a shrug, I smirked at her, deciding to tease her a bit. “I’m saving my appetite for later,” I said lowly, my gaze flickering to her lips.
Eden's POV:
When I noticed where his eyes flickered to, I bit my lower lip, my hands gripped my shirt tightly.
"What for?" I asked, noticing my voice wavering slightly, my mouth feeling dry. "Do you plan on going for dessert?"
Sterling's POV:
And that's what I call payback, my dear.
"Of course. Though I might not have to buy it," I said, still smirking at her as I stood. "I'll be right back. I'm going to go pay."
Eden's POV:
And this is what happens when I try to tease him. It backfires on me.
"You don't have to pay for me," I said quickly. "We can split the bill."
Sterling's POV:
My smirk softened to a smile as I shook my head at her. "No, it's my treat. As every date will be hereafter," I assured her, leaning over to kiss her forehead gently. "Just give me a sec to pay."
Eden’s POV:
I stared at Sterling’s back, my hand on my forehead, the part where he kissed burning.
“Damn it,” I cursed, resting my head on the table.
Sterling's POV:
As soon as I had paid, I walked back to the table, holding a box for my food. I totally wasn't just going to waste it; I had paid for it, after all.
Sitting back down across from Eden, I smiled at her. She had her head on the table like she was embarrassed or something, and I reached over to ruffle her hair.
"You okay there?" I asked, chuckling a bit as I packed my food away.
Eden’s POV:
I immediately sat up straight, glaring at Sterling as I tried to fix my hair. Although I wasn’t the type to worry about my appearance, my hair when messy looked annoying.
“Yes,” I replied sarcastically, standing up. “I’m totally fine, Sterling. It’s not like anything you said made me want to tie you up and never let you kiss me again.”
Sterling’s POV:
I raised an eyebrow at her, standing after I had finished packing up my food. A smirk overtook my lips again as I stepped closer to her. “Except you would miss it, wouldn’t you? You would miss the taste and the feel of my lips on yours. Wouldn’t you?” I teased, my voice soft and low as I spoke for her ears only. Before taking a step back, I leaned in and brushed my lips across her cheek. “C’mon, let’s go. We’ve go somewhere to be.”
Eden's POV:
My heart hammered wildly in my chest, my breath knocking out of my lungs as I took in what Sterling whispered in my ears. I felt frozen in my spot, my breath hitching. Everywhere he touched me burned, giving away a pleasant feeling, one that fueled my desires–the ones I wasn't ready for. Not yet.
Finally, I moved, straining my neck to look up at Sterling.
"You missed," I said, trying to be cheeky but failing as my voice cracked. When I was by myself, I stood tall. Nothing bothered me. Not the hushed voices of the gossipers, not the haters spreading rumors. When I was by myself, I was confident. Next to Sterling… I felt small. It was shocking, my development. I didn't know how I went from being cold to soft with Sterling within a month. With Sterling, I felt like a normal girl. I wasn't a girl treated differently because she was scary or because she could destroy you with a snap of her fingers. I wasn't a girl looking for a fight. I was just Eden, a normal high-school student falling deeper into the one thing she didn't think was meant for her.
Sterling’s POV:
I chuckled a bit and leaned down to press a gentle kiss to her lips. “You are one of a kind, Eden McArthur, and I like you a lot, but I would like to finish this conversation somewhere a bit more private.”
Eden’s POV:
I nodded quietly, slipping my small hand in his, intertwining our fingers together.
“Lead the way…”
Sterling’s POV:
The drive to the park was rather uneventful. Small talk and little smiles were passed back and forth, but that was about it. When we finally arrived, I parked the car and turned to Eden.
“I need you to stay here for a moment, okay? I’ve gotta go check on something,” I asked, smiling at her gently.
Eden’s POV:
I waited patiently for Sterling to come back, feeling anxious as time passed by. Thoughts came rushing to my head, my mind wondering if it was it.
Was Sterling having second thoughts? Was I being too irritating? Did he realize I wasn’t the one for him?
Sterling’s POV:
I had helped Lucas and Ashley set up a trail of candles (electric because of fire hazards) in the park earlier, and now they met me at the end of it with my sign and the tiara I had for Eden. Breathing a sigh of relief, I thanked them and asked them to go get Eden for me. Yes, I was sure she would be confused, but I hoped that my surprise would make it worth it.
(Lucas and Eden? :o)
(Whoops… One sec…)
Eden’s POV:
I was too immersed in my songs that I failed to notice someone nearing my car.
I opened my eyes to the tapping of the window, thinking it was Sterling.
It was my brother and Ashley.
I rolled down the window, confused.
“E!” Lucas smiled. “Ash and I were here on a date when we ran into Sterling. We thought it would be awesome if we spent the day together again.”
There was nothing I could deduce from my brother’s expression. If something was wrong, he wasn’t showing it. It wasn’t a surprise. Luke was rather amazing at concealing his emotions and thoughts.
“Where’s Sterling?” I asked, raising my eyebrows.
Ashley’s POV:
I smiled at my best friend. She had no idea what we were doing, and it just made it all that much better.
“He was using the restroom. He said he would meet us somewhere,” I explained effortlessly as I leaned into Lucas’s side, one hand grasping his and the other holding onto his arm.
Eden’s POV:
“Why would be need to go to a park to use the bathroom? We passed by several cafés. He could have used any of those,” I said suspiciously, narrowing my eyes. It wasn’t my birthday because if it was, Luke would be in on it. It wasn’t anything special.
So what was going on?
Lucas rolled his eyes.
“You are too suspicious, Eden,” he said exasperatedly. “Come on, let’s go.”
He didn’t give me time to argue as he unlocked the door through the open window and opened it and pulled me outside.
I stumbled a little but otherwise regained my balance.
“You do that again…” I started in a threatening voice. “And I will end you, Lucas McArthur. I can get out of the car myself.”
“Whatever, let’s go now.”
Sterling’s POV:
I shifted in place nervously as I waited. I was sure she would say yes, but that didn’t stop my heart from racing, from pounding so hard against my chest that I was sure it would burst out.
Eden was the only girl that made me this nervous. It might be cliche or whatever, but it was true. Around the other girls, I was cool and calm, and I didn’t have to guess what they were thinking or what they were saying. But Eden… She was on a whole different level. And I wanted to reach it.
Eden’s POV:
“Okay, here we are,” Lucas said and we stopped walking. I looked around with my eyebrows raised.
“I don’t see Sterling,” I remarked with a roll of my eyes. Lucas then pointed at something and I looked before candles caught my eyes.
Candles? In the park? What? I didn’t get what was going on. I knew, in a way, it must have been something to do with these three, but what exactly, I didn’t know.
“We have to follow the candles,” Lucas told me, ushering me forward. I took a few steps before turning back but my brother and his girlfriend had disappeared.
I sighed before following what they said, walking alongside the candles, the sight making me feel calm.
Sterling’s POV:
I got a text from Ashley telling me that Eden was on her way, and I quickly picked my sign back up. I hoped she would like it… I had spent forever working on it, and my brother had teased me relentlessly about how “cutesy” it looked. That was the point, of course, but it was still really annoying. He would understand some day, which I didn’t hesitate to assure him.
(is this a… promposal?)
