Aukai took a deep breath. "I'm sorry I freaked out earlier… Can you tell me…. What was I saying…?"
Aukai took a deep breath. "I'm sorry I freaked out earlier… Can you tell me…. What was I saying…?"
Alex stopped for a moment, then continued playing with Aukai's hair.
"You were talking about wanting to kick the bucket, and…" Alex thought for a moment, unsure if he should say what else she said.
Aukai's eyes searched for his, slightly scared. "And?"
Alex sighed.
"You said you wanted to see your family. Especially your little brother. You also mentioned someone named Seth." Alex held his breath after saying this; how would she respond?
Aukai sighed. "Seth was my little brother. He was my life."
Alex breathed again, resuming playing with her beautiful hair.
Aukai realized that Alex had been tense while he asked who Seth was. "Who did you think Seth was?" she asked curiously.
"Just… Someone from your past." He twirled the ends of her hair in his fingers.
Aukai's eyes narrowed at him suspiciously. "Not much of an answer." But she just yawned and let it go. "Your mom was nice… I feel bad about barging in like this though."
"Don't worry about it. She needs the change in routine." Alex gave a small smile.
Aukai sighed. "How long do I need to bother her with my presence in her house?"
"At least fifteen more minutes." Alex rubbed his thumb on the back of Aukai's hand.
"It was a concussion."
Aukai's forehead scrunched. This was worrying…. She stretched out a hand and formed a flower, which she started playing with.
"Is spending fifteen more minutes all that bad?" Alex asked, seeing her forehead scrunched up.
Aukai shook her head. "It's not that…." Her eyes exploded into a dark blue with dark gray.
"What's wrong?" Alex asked, seeing her eyes change color.
Aukai just breathed, "It means I'm dying…"
"What?!" Alex nearly yelled. Dying?! How?!
"Alex, calm down please." Aukai's head hurt suddenly at the yell. "Yes. Dying. It's just a part of this curse."
Alex wrapped his arm around her.
"So now we have a time limit on figuring out how to break the curse?"
Aukai rolled her eyes. "A couple years, yes. Don't worry. We have time. It just means I'm going to be extra delicate and prone to injury."
"I see. You know I'm gonna protect you, right?" Alex smiled, a genuine smile that light up his eyes.
"You're never getting rid of me."
Aukai looked at him with confused, pine-green eyes. "You puzzle me sometimes."
Alex gave a soft laugh.
"How's this; I'll protect you." And he meant it.
Aukai shrugged. "Alright. I don't know why you're even helping me in the first place. I've never done anything for you."
