"Come on! We need to get to know our classmates!" Myra exclaims, pulling her older siblings along behind her. Ryder rolls his eyes but follows Myra, River signing at them to slow down. "Myra, we have a few hours. If anything, we need to find our rooms first. And I want to go to the armory." "And I want to go see what herbs they have for potion making." Ryder added on.
The Pyrie siblings strolled through the halls of their new school, sticking close together. “Why’d we have to come here?” Jasper complained, a bit daunted by the sheer size of the place.
“Because we all need to get jobs. Relax, Jasper. If we stick together we’ll be fine.” Arkyn assured her younger brother, casting a worried glance at Seren. “Everything will be fine. Let’s check out the potions room. Maybe you'll be good at that, Seren.” Arkyn could see the despair on Seren’s face as they walked past floating torches and magics of all kinds.
Myra gave a small pout but gave in. "Fiiineee." She drew out, uncrossing her arms. "I think the potions room is the closest. Ryder, you still have some shrinking potions on you right? You could shrink our stuff and we could wait to put it in our room." Myra finished with a smile, Ryder nodding and pulling out some shrinking potion to pour on their bags. "Then we can go to the armory, right? I want to see who the fencing instructor is."
“Come on, let’s go.” Arkyn began to herd the boys into the potions room, looking around at all of the cauldrons and benches. “Well, Seren? What do you think?” She looked over to see her youngest brother having a sneezing fit as got too close to one of the cabinets.
"Haha! Here it is!" Myra sang, following an excited looking Ryder into the room. "It's so…" Ryder trailed off, running over to an open cabinet. "Look at these Winterbella berries! These are so rare!" He exclaimed. "And look at these Mertailian leaves!" River gave a silent chuckle as they watched their younger brother geek out about herbs.
While Arkyn fussed over Seren, shooing him away from the herbs, Jasper was the first to notice the arrival of other kids. “Hail and well met!” He bellowed dramatically, grinning at he waved to the others.
"Ack!" Myra yelled, snapping Ryder out of the awe induced trance. "Sorry, you startled me a bit!" She apologized, giving a wave. River also waved, elbowing Ryder to do so too. "Ryder, don't be rude." They signed, Ryder signing back. "Sorry Rives." He turned to the others in the room. "Hello!"
Arkyn looked up at the commotion, dragging Seren along with her to go stand behind Jasper. “Greetings!” She dipped her head, sending Jasper a quick glare. “I apologize if we're bothering you. We’re just about to leave anyways.”
"Oh no! It's fine, I just get startled very easily!" Myra exlaimed. "I'm Myra! These are my older siblings!" She pointed at River and Ryder.
"I'm Ryder, nice to meet you."
"And I'm River, I can't talk, so I hope you can read sign."
"If you can't read sign, their name is River and they can't speak."
“Seren can read it.” Arkyn gestured to the small boy, who was still sneezing a bit. “He’s just uh… a little allergic to some of the herbs in here.” She smiled awkwardly, rubbing Seren’s back. “It’s nice to meet you all.”
"It's probably the Winterbella, you have to build up an immunity over time. You could help treat the sneezing with some Covart and maybe some Averten." Ryder mused, Myra grabbing his hand. "Ryder's a potion brewer! He knows all about this stuff!"
Seren responded with another sneeze, mumbling a quiet, “Please help.” Arkyn sighed. “I have no idea what those herbs are, but if you could help it would be appreciated.
"Sure thing." He agreed. "River, do you think you could get the Covart? It's the one I used to treat Myra's cough." Ryder instructed, walking over to another cabinet, he had smelled the Averten in it. "What can I do?" Myra asked. "Can you grab some sage and basil? It'll help it taste better."
Jasper watched on, fascinated by Ryder’s ability to differentiate between the hundreds of herbs on the shelves. “You really know all this?” He mumbled out loud, a bit awed.
"Mhm." Ryder murmured, grinding the herbs that his siblings had gotten him into fine dust, making it paste after adding a bit of water. Myra knew that Ryder was too focused on his potion and gave herself the task of explaining. "Our parents passed away when I was a few years old, so Ryder and River had to deal with me growing up! River learned how to hunt and fight and Ryder knew that we were both idiots when it came to first aid, so he learned about herbs and pastes! Now, he knows a bunch of potions along with that!"
“Our parents disappeared a few months ago.” Arkyn replied softly. “I’m sorry for your loss.” She gently ruffled Jasper’s hair, knowing how sensitive he was about their deaths still.
"It's fine, it happened about eleven years ago," Ryder said, waving it off. "Uh, sneeze boy, your name was Seren right? I need to know your name to add a small charm to it."
“His name is Seren.” Arkyn confirmed, rubbing the small boy’s back.
"Cool beans." Ryder said, muttering something in a demonic languge. "Hm, if you put this under your nostrils, it should help build up the immunity."
“You’re positive that’s safe?” Arkyn stood over her little brothers protectively. She wanted to trust these new kids, but her siblings came first.
"Being positive is for idiots, but yes, I'm sure it's safe." Ryder said with a blank face, scraping the rest of the potion into a small vial and slipping it into his shoulder bag.
Arkyn bristled a little at his response but said nothing, proceeding to pick Seren up, as all three of them were tragically underweight, it wasn’t very hard. She carried the sniffling boy over to Ryder, placing him down gently.
Ryder handed the remaining paste to Seren, careful not to touch him. "Here you go, just put this under your nostrils and you'll be better in no time."
