"It's not that easy," She said, looking away, unable to meet his eyes. "You don't know how hard it is."
"It's not that easy," She said, looking away, unable to meet his eyes. "You don't know how hard it is."
"Then tell me, help me learn how hard it is and let me help."
She pulled her hands from Rhys', curling into a ball. "When I was a kid, it was all fine. Even though the kingdom didn't know about my magic, my family did. Elina loved it. She would drag me from bed each night and we play in the snow that I created. And one night…I struck her."
"What happened after that?" He asked quietly, sitting not too far away form her.
"Well…Our parents rushed us to a place in the woods, and these rock trolls helped her. Apparently the elder changed her memories from us playing with my magic to us simply playing in the snow. After that, I couldn't really control my powers. I was scared. I locked myself away."
"Did no one try to help you? Did your parents not look for outside sources to help?"
"No," She said softly. "They were scared of me. I could see it in their eyes. And then…then they died. In a shipwreck. I was 18. My room was filled with ice and spikes. Then on my 21st birthday, I became Queen."
"I'm so sorry… That's horrible…"
"The worst part was that I couldn't speak to Elina. I was trapped and I couldn't get out."
"All the more reason to speak to her now, then, right?"
"No," She said softly, eyes sad. "I…I can't talk to her. It's been so long, I barely know anything any more."
Rhys was quiet for a moment, “Let me help, then. Please.”
"How are you going to help me? I'm helpless. No one cares for me. I don't have a family. And I rule a kingdom that doesn't want me as its ruler. What can you do?"
"Look, I may not be able to help much, but I'm able to help you control your powers, learn to use them properly, make sure you're not afraid of them. And… I'll be there when you decide to talk to your sister."
She looked at him, eyes welling with tears. As her emotions overwhelmed her, she wrapped her arms around his neck. As she finally started to feel safe for the first time in years, the tears started to fall. And she let them.
Rhys hugged her back tightly. He basically pulled her into his lap to hug her better, murmuring soft words of praises and encouragement.
Kallista couldn't explain how good this made her feel. She hadn't felt affection in years, and this little sliver of care meant so much to her.
Rhys felt so bad for Kallista. He couldn't image not having affection like this so he didn't stop what he was doing.
She pulled away, wiping her eyes. The tear droplets formed little spheres of ice on her fingers. She laughed at the fact.
Rhys smiled softy at her. He raised his hand and let a couple snowflakes dance around his fingers.
"It probably doesn't mean too much to you, but that meant a lot to me. Really."
“It’s okay. I’d gladly do it again if you ever asked me too.”
