“You know me… Mercutio Escalus. Master of romance.” I fidgeted with the cup of lemonade, completely embarrassed.
“You know me… Mercutio Escalus. Master of romance.” I fidgeted with the cup of lemonade, completely embarrassed.
Something about this boy was constantly unearthing a need to flirt, to bar my eyelashes. So, flirt I did. Leaanjng in a little, I raised an eyebrow. “Oh? Why don’t you show me?”
My face matched the pitcher of pink lemonade in color now. She was flirting. This shouldn’t be an issue. I’m actually pretty good at flirting most of the time. Something about Marina just… deactivated that completely, flipping a switch I didn’t know I had in the first place. “Um…” I struggled to come up with something clever, curing under my breath as my brain failed me. I helplessly adjusted my glasses, taking them off so I didn’t have to make eye contact.
Moving slowly, I nudged his glasses back over the bridge of his nose. “Too far?” I whispered, pulling back. “Sorry…”
“No, it’s not like that. I’m not fragile.” I protested, blinking as my vision adjusted, turning the world from a colorful blur to defined shapes. “I’m normally not this awkward— It’s just, I like you a lot and I’m super hungover. I don’t want to scare you off.”
“You know what would scare me off,” I murmured patiently, “And you’re fine right now. Do I really fluster you that much?”
“Does this answer your question?” I replied bluntly, pointing to my reddened cheeks.
I laughed softly, reaching for his hand. “Aww… you’re adotable, Mercutio..”
I groaned in exasperation. “I just started liking you recently, alright? I’m still in the embarrassing stages.” I grumbled, grabbing a donut out of the bag I brought.
“Works for me~” I chuckled, releasing his hand to lift the cup to my lips. “The more flustered you are, the less shy I am.”
“That seems like an unfair trade off.” I sighed, taking a bite of the donut, and attempting to subtlety scoot closer to Marina.
“Sounds perfectly fair to me.” I grinned over the rim of my cup. “Let’s play… Twenty Questions. I want to get to know you better.”
“I haven’t played this game in forever.” I rolled my eyes with mock annoyance. “Ask away, Pazza.”
I leaned over to flick his nose. "Who's you favourite family member?"
“Lorenzo, my nephew.” I smiled faintly at the thought of the small boy. “You would like him too. He takes after me.”
I blinked up at him, confused. “Wait—how do you have a nephew?”
I let out a sigh, pinching the bridge of my nose. “I… I have an older sister.”
I nodded slowly in understanding. "How old is he? Your nephew, I mean."
“He’s four.” I murmured, closing my eyes and enjoying the breeze. “My parents haven’t forgiven her for getting pregnant before marriage.” I paused, reliving the screaming matching for a moment, sucked into the past. “They’re hypocrites. Never gave a fuck about me when I started… you know.”
I fell silent, taking his hand in both of mine and holding on tight. "I'm sorry about them…."
I squeezed her hand, seeking solace from her. “Thanks.” I took a shaky breath. “Thanks for listening to me rant.”
"Anytime," I answered honestly, shifting ever-so-slightly closer to him. "Your turn to ask me."
“Did you ever have another boyfriend? Before me? Or is their someone else you sort of like? I won’t be mad—“ I cut myself off, trying not to bombard her with too many questions at once. Sue me, I wanted to know if I had competition. I needed this girl. What if their was someone else trying to steal her away from me?
"I had two boyfriends before you," I admitted, swallowing the bile that rose to my throat at the thought of the most recent one. "andrew (Our Supreme Lord and Overseer) Ramirez….. and…. and Chris Moretti. Both from school, you know them. And no, I don't like anyone else."
I nodded, but I couldn’t help but notice the way she stammered. “Did something happen with one of them? You don’t have to tell me if it’ll upset you.”
