MARINA: *oh, I remember reading the golden compass. Haven’t read lord of the flies, tho. I like the little prince, tbhI
MARINA: *oh, I remember reading the golden compass. Haven’t read lord of the flies, tho. I like the little prince, tbhI
MERCUTIO: I’ve been meaning to read that, but never got around to it.
MARINA: its sweet. Made me cry. What do you think about lipgloss?
MERCUTIO: Is that like… chapstick?
MARINA: 😂 the glossy shiny clear stuff that’s sometimes shimmery
MERCUTIO: Oh! Yeah, that’s cool.
MARINA: lol, alright.
As much as I regretted it, my eyes were growing tired, blurring every few seconds from exhaustion. I stocked a yawn, awaiting his response.
*stifled omg
MERCUTIO: Its almost three now, I can’t believe we’ve tolerated each other for this long.
MARINA: its pretty unbelievable.. speaking of, I should probably sleep now. Gnight
MERCUTIO: lol, night Marina.
I tucked my phone in the space between my bedside table and the wall and rolled onto my side. What am I getting myself into? This was completely insane—a competition with Mercutio to fluster each other? Furthermore, if told him the biggest secret I’d ever kept.. This would only end badly. But in all honesty, I really didn’t care.
Mercutio was out like a light, falling back to sleep almost instantly. He wasn’t even sure how to feel about what he’d just done, but maybe he was willing to consider that this wasn’t about ten dollars…
The next morning, I woke a half hour earlier than necessary. Not on purpose, but for whatever reason, I was grateful. If I’m going to be stupid, I might as well go big or go home..
Which was why I arrived at school two hours later in a casual, pale blue dress with a cropped sweatshirt thrown on top. To add to that, my dirty blonde hair was pulled back into a sleek ponytail, tiny hoops dangled from my ears, and my lips were coated in a thin layer of lipgloss. Much to my classmates’ surprise, I didn’t normally wear makeup, but I’d gone so far as to apply a bit of mascara before I got to school.
This whole idea was ridiculous. A competition with the Montague I’d previously despised to fluster each other? Whatever it was, it crossed all the lines of casual friendship. But what was done couldn’t be reversed, and after I’d fold him so much last night… I couldn’t really go back.
I had to wake up about twenty minutes later than usual to avoid slathering gel in my hair and putting on my contacts. I despised both the unruly auburn brown curls and my squared rimmed black glasses. But today I would have to suck it up and deal with them both, resisting the urge to fix my bedhead.
I showed up at school, trying to drown my insecurities out with the music pulling through my headphones. I looked like a dork in sneakers and black jeans, the office-like white button up shirt with the sleeves rolled up to my elbows only seemed to make everything worse. Hell, maybe this was a bad idea…
Juliet’s POV
When I arrived at school, I was shocked to see Marina in a dress, a cropped sweatshirt, mascara, lipgloss, and a ponytail. Sure, she liked to dress up a little. She liked shopping, nice clothes, cared about her appearance. But this? She never wore her hair in a ponytail and rarely wore makeup. Furthermore, the dress and sweatshirt were both new. A combination of those things didn’t exactly make for a normal, every day Marina. There had to be some other factor…… like a guy.
“Mari?” I approached her locker, a smile overtaking my lips. “You look amazing! But, ah, what’s the occasion? Who’s the lucky boy. Wait——“ My eyes widened as I peered over her shoulder at a senior coming down the hall. “Is that Mercutio?”
I kept my head down, groaning inaudibly as I heard whispers begin to stir about my appearance. God, Romeo was going to have a field day when he saw me, but knowing him, he’d be late. I wasn’t even sure whether to be relieved or horrified. On the one hand, he wouldn’t be able to make fun of me for as long, but that also meant for the time being I’m isolated.
I pushed my glasses back up onto the bridge of my nose, forcing my usual apathetic expression onto my face as I reached my locker.
Marina's POV
A light blush rose to my cheeks. Lucky boy? "Juliet, there's no—"
And that's when I saw him.
"Oh my god…." I breathed, amusement lining my features. "Is he wearing glasses?" Naturally, I recalled last night's conversation, how glasses ad a bedhead had been on my list…. He's actually pretty cute with them….
At this rate I was going to drown myself in the bathroom sink before second period. I was fine with attracting attention, I usually did anyways. But not this kind of attention.
Juliet gave me a meaningful look. "……Marina?"
"No!" I practically yelled the moment I interpreted the stare. "God, no. What do you take me for, the Capulet version of Romeo?" My best friend coughed awkwardly. Why was she blushing all of a sudden?
"Anyways," I muttered, "I have to get to class." First period with Mercutio. Wish me luck. "See you at lunch!"
I unpacked my back in a rush, grabbing my folder, a notebook, and a pen. I couldnt stand here in the middle of the hallway. It was awful enough already, but once Romeo found me I was screwed. I took off towards my first class, chewing my lip.
By the time I got to class, there were only two seats left near the back. One for me……. and one for Mercutio.
How cliché.
Students stared as I entered, but for once, the attention brought a smile to my face. I was satisfied with how I looked, and it felt good to stand out. I felt……. beautiful.
I seated myself quickly and placed a battered library copy of Lord of the Flies on the top of my desk.
People stared and god did I hate it. Whispers flying back and forth as I took my seat next to Marina, trying to play things off as cool.
She remembered the book… My eyes landed on Lord of the Flies before slowly taking the rest of her in. She looked incredible while I now looked like I work as an unpaid I.T. intern.
My eyes slid sideways when Mercutio seated himself next to me. It was a bit disorienting, how different he looked without hair gel and contact lenses. He looked sort of dorky like this, but not in a bad way. Cute-dorky.
As soon as the thought flashed through my head, I was wincing and looking away. What was I doing? There was no way this could end well….
"Hey, Mercutio."
“Ciao, Pazza.” I replied flatly, smoothing back my hair with my hand. It, of course, fell right back into place, leaving me to suffer. “I haven’t looked like this since middle school, I can’t believe you find this hot.” He grumbled, fidgeting self consciously with his pen.
