He shrugged. "I don't have that luxury. A job's a job."
He shrugged. "I don't have that luxury. A job's a job."
“How long have you been working there?”
"'Bout a year. Pays pretty well, but just a rough place."
Maddie nodded a little in understanding, “How many times has something like that happened?”
"This is probably the 3rd or 4th time, although it's the first time someone brought a gun."
She shivered a little, “Annnnd that’s the last time I ever let myself be dragged to a bar.”
"Definitely. Where even was your friend?"
“Off in the corner making out with some drunk guy.” She shrugged.
He nodded. "I saw hem. I was about to get them to leave. Her man was a little…handsy."
Maddie snorted, “Maybe more then a little.
He nodded. "I hope they're alright."
“I’m sure they are. Kate’s pretty good at getting out of tricky situations.”
"Being smart doesn't keep you safe from bullets," he said.
“I never said she didn’t know how to deal with bullets.”
"You don't seem like the type of girl to hang out with that crowd."
“I don’t. She does and then drags me to places because of it,” She shrugged, “If I had any other good friends I’d ditch her.”
He shrugged. "Makes sense, I guess." An awkward silence ensued for about 2 minutes before he glanced at his leg. "It'll leave one hell of a scar, huh?"
"Battle wounds, that's what it is." She replied, looking down at his leg with a small frown.
"Somethin' to tell my kids about, for sure. They start complaining, just whip that scar out."
"You have kids?"
"Future kids, I meant."
"Oh, that makes sense. Sorry, I'm a little slow tonight…."
He shook his head. "You got shit thrown at you, beer poured on your shirt, then had to carry my fat ass into a car. You have an excuse."
She sighed and nodded a little, "I guess you're right. The only thing I have to disagree with is that you're not fat."
"I'm a little chunky, and I'm not ashamed of it." He sighed, leaning his head back onto the pillow. "How long to you plan on staying?"
