"Indeed I am." She scooped up ash and quickly drew her mark, then grabbed the briefcase and medals. "Good to go?"
"Indeed I am." She scooped up ash and quickly drew her mark, then grabbed the briefcase and medals. "Good to go?"
"good! i'll carry something, if you need me to,"
once they had gotten down and out of sight, nik let himself feel again. he worried his lip, rubbing his wrists ad hugging himself as they walked.
Tessa glanced sidelong over to Nik. "Hey, you alright?"
"i'm fine. this happens-this happens sometimes. whenever i deal with someone involved in… a certain situation, i tend to get nervous. i'm glad he's learned a lesson, though."
he looked back at her, mouth set in a faint smile.
"you?"
She stretched her arms over her head and closed her eyes as she tilted her head back. "I've pretty much grown numb to all the bad things. Seeing the worst humanity has to offer kinda does that to a person. Call me a psycho, I don't care. I've heard it all before."
"i won't. " he took a breath, looking at their surroundings. "i won't call you anything you don't want me to."
he stopped rubbing at his wrists so hard, mostly just tracing over them. he offered a crooked half-smile,
looking apologetic.
She cracked open an eye. "That's the first," she muttered, mostly to herself. Her arms remained raised, but she rested them behind her head. "Why the hat?" She asked curiously.
"ah! well, the smile and ever-present humor is one of my trademarks, but i'm not trying to tell everyone who i am. so i found a compromise. why the gloves?" his spirit had returned a little, and he gestured as he talked.
"Leaves no trace–aka, fingerprints–and I can climb easier while still looking badass." She shrugged and dropped her arms. "I have other gadgets and signature accessories, but I didn't feel like carrying them around today."
"that's cool! but uh… where to now?" he looked around. "i'll help you with one of your hits if you want company, otherwise i can fuck off."
Tessa cocked her head. "Well, I have to sell off this briefcase and stash the medals for later use first. But I have this government facility I've been meaning to break into for a while. They're supposedly doing experiments on street rats such as myself, and I need to gather info and proof. Files and maybe some video?" She gave Nik a pointed look.
he beamed, tugging at the camera bag that was ever-present on his shoulder. "oh, that gives me all kinds of ideas. lead the way, whichever thing you want to do first.'"
"Drop off first," she declared, switching directions and grabbing Nik's arm to pull him along. "I need to grab a few things at my hideout anyway. Maps, air duct layouts, office spaces, hidden rooms, passcode override codes, security override, yadda yadda yadda. Doesn't hurt to change into something a little less roomy. Less to catch on the better."
"good plan."
(timeskip?)
(Sure, just outside the facility?)
"Okay. Here's the address." She recited the address of an empty plot of land–though that's what everyone thought.
(yep)
"thank you. i'll be there."
Tessa had a belt filled with tiny bombs and straps holding multiple daggers. She hated guns for some reason, but she could use them if needed. She had changed into tight but stretchy faux leather pants, a black tank top that showed lingering scars on her arms from chains and straps, her hair tied up in a high ponytail, and black combat boots.
She strode up to the empty plot of land, stretching her arms and shoulders out.
nik was waiting for her, crouched low towards the front. he had switched his layer-y attire for a white tank, slim black jeans and a pair of sturdy boots. he straightened when he saw her, and quietly fell into step.
"The facility is underground, if you couldn't tell." She counted her steps under her breath as she walked, then brought Nik to a halt by grabbing the back of his shirt. "But that doesn't stop them from setting up traps."
he let her stop him, looking at the ground.
"makes sense. glad you're here to keep me in step."
She stomped a foot, hearing a faint gong, gong, gong from a hollow bit behind metal. "And here's our entrance." She crouched down and pulled out her phone, typing in some passcode that she happened to obtain from a security guard. The defense system shut down. "Okay, it will take them some time to figure out that the security is down. We have ten minutes tops. If things go bad, I can provide you cover."
"thank you. okay, ten minutes. lead the way." he watched her, waiting for her to give any clue as to how to actually get inside the building.
She ran her fingers over the grass until they hit a crevice, and she dug them in and lifted a hidden trapdoor. "Ladies first, " she cooed at Nik with a smirk.
"oh thank you, good sir." he teased back, beginning to look for a ladder.
when he found it, he swung down and descended.
when he reached the bottom, he looked around. a dim gray hallway looked back at him, and he shuddered before turning to wait for tessa.
Tess carefully climbed down the ladder, holding the heavy trapdoor until it quietly hit the frame, then jumped the rest of the way down. She went through the maps she studied in her mind, figuring out where they were and where to go. "Straight, right, left, left, straight, right, straight, then a door at the end of the hall."
