(Hey, guys, Otter asked me to tell you that they aren’t going to be on tonight because of some other commitments, so we’ll probably start tomorrow.)
((It;s cool! Looking forward to it!))
(Hi guys! I’m so sorry about last night! Tonight will be busy for me as well, so I’ll post a starter now, feel free to respond when you can!)
Paxton woke up alone, but this was a usual occurrence for the young man since he’d turned eighteen several years ago. He groaned as he sat up in bed, accidentally kicking Smoke as he moved. Today was market day. He would be forced to talk and barter until he could get enough food for the next week. Everyone knew of the poor Gates boy who trudged around in tattered clothes once a week.
Pinesville had always been rather well off, and even Paxton had grown up with the comforts of money—for a short time, at least. He gathered up his things, a simple satchel with a few small coins, along with a couple of eggs from the few chickens left over from the once large farm. Without even saying good morning to the cat, he simply scooped up Smoke, placing her gently in the satchel before walking for around a half hour to the market place, where he strayed towards the edges.
Azzy rested her forearms on the surface of her booth, periodically batting Astra away from the bread. This morning had been so slow, the same routine baking and loading into the cart, and once again here she was, doing her boss's job. With a groan, she dropped her head onto her arms, pondering what had led her to this boring point.
Azzy had grown up here, in a cabin on the edge of town with her family. They had kept away from the rest of the townspeople, in order to keep people from looking into their…parenting techniques. After her parents had passed, she and her twin brother had tried to make friends, and get to know the people they should have grown up with. That hadn't gone too well.
Breathe.
A low, musical voice blew through Faith's head, rattling memories like breeze through a set of wind chimes. Close your eyes, press your palm into the clay above the statue's heart. The thick, wet mixture was slick against the flat of her hand, cold and lifeless….. but not for long. Now, inhale. Focus on the blood rushing through your veins, the thump-thumping of your heart. Each twitch of a muscle, each stirring of a hair. Draw the life from it, pull it all into your chest, and little by little, allow a small portion to seep through your skin and into the clay.
A golden, sunshiny warmth formed in Faith's chest. Slowly, as the voice from so long ago had instructed, she pushed.Glowing energy trickled from her palm and into the dragon beneath her fingers. Next, she pressed her thumb into the space between his eyes and did the same.
There. Now, all I have to do is kiln it…
Paxton walked into the more concentrated area of the market, working up the courage to talk to someone. He wore a naturally moody expression, one that made the townspeople to give him a wide berth.
He appraised the booths around him. A man with a fox sitting elegantly beside him selling meats. Too clever. Could catch me stealing. He then looked to his right to see a girl swatting at a babbling owl. Bingo. Pax squared his shoulders, shouldering his way through the crowd towards the booth.
Astra’s POV
“Luz I deserve a little piece! The wind is ruffling my feathers! See?” Astra purposely ruffled her wing, cooing in protest. “We’ve been working hard all day!” She tottered towards another loaf of bread, her talons clicking softly on the wood.
"I've been working hard." Azzy shot back, lifting her head and gently shoving Astra away from the bread. "You get left overs, remember? That's what Donovan said we could take." She said, chuckling at Astra's insistence on getting into the bread.
Kanaan
Kanaan laid near Faith, watching her work quietly. He was incredibly proud of her skill with molding clay, and adored watching her work. Keeping his ears on their surroundings, he rested his head down, a content huff leaving him.
Faith
Faith sat back, shifting from her knees and into a cross-legged position. She lifted a hand to wipe the sweat from her brow—how long had she been working? What time was it? Why was it so bright outside?
A sigh parted her lips. Slowly, her shoulders sank, the tension leaving her muscles. After the energy exchange, she was… exhausted. Drained. And hungry. "Kanaan? What time is it?"
Kanaan
"I believe it is late morning. Judging by the position of the sun." He said, standing and gracefully making his way over to her. "You need something to eat, Faith." His voice was calm, but slightly worried.
Faith
Faith blinked, and a furrow formed between her brows. "That can't be right…." she murmured, rubbing at her eyes. "It was evening a few minutes ago… right? I started this project after dinner.."
Paxton’s POV
Pax sighed as Smoke refused to stir, leaving him virtually on his own as he finally reached the booth. He glowered at the shorter girl manning it, waiting for her to acknowledge him.
Astra’s POV
“Him and his little rat are so rude to us!” Astra complained, shifting her weight from talon to talon. “I’ll starve before leftovers!” The owl suddenly fell quiet as Pax’s shadow looked over her, sending her fluttering to Luz’s shoulder.
Kanaan
"No, we have been here for quite awhile. I watched the sun set, in fact." Kanaan shook his head, chuckling softly. It happened again. "Breaks are a thing people take, you know."
Azzy
Azzy rolled her eyes, craning her neck to meet the eyes of the guy at her booth. "How can I help you, sir." The sir was tacked on sarcastically, a passive-aggressive response to his glower as she smiled brightly.
Faith
"Oh….." Faith frowned, still entangled in a hazy web of fevered imagination. "I did it again? I'm sorry, Kanaan, I didn't even realize how fast time was passing… have you eaten? I didn't mean to keep you here…"
Max put the hood to cover his blonde hair as he walked around, letting Achilles follow him. He was tired but he had to make at-least 10 sales so he could go back home. I hate everything. He looked around and surveyed everyone. Definitely not the man with the fox, maybe an owl? or a cat?
Smoke finally stirred as she looked around lazily. "Idiot, why did you have to kick me when you woke up?" She asked, debating on whether or not she should fall back asleep or not.
Paxton’s POV
“I need half a loaf of bread.” Pax replied gruffly. He shifted his glare down to Smoke. “I’m not in the mood to bicker with you.” He grumbled in annoyance.
Astra’s POV
“He has the personality of a peeled lime.” Astra twittered quietly into Luz’s ear. Paxton didn’t appear to hear this, busy arguing with Smoke.
Max's POV
Max sighed as he looked around, realizing he had forgotten to go to the store. Idiot, Idiot. He thought as he turned around and headed to the store.
Smoke's POV
"Well, neither am I, so let me sleep in peace." Smoke muttered in reply before burying her head back into the basket and trying to fall asleep again.
Azzy
"Sure thing." Azzy said, voice sickly sweet as she grabbed a loaf, pulling an unnecessarily wicked looking knife from under the counter. Astra's comment made her snicker, and she bit her lip to muffle tho sound as she cut the loaf.
Kanaan
"I have not, but don't worry." He said softly. "I enjoy watching you work, anyway. It is quite interesting, and relaxing. Come, we should get you fed."
