I looked innocently up at him through half-lowered lashes, biting my lower lip. “I thought you were going to get dressed?”
I looked innocently up at him through half-lowered lashes, biting my lower lip. “I thought you were going to get dressed?”
“I am,” my voice rumbled in my chest, “But I feel like teasing you a bit more.”
“Oh?” I brushed my mouth across the base of his neck. “Do you?”
I released a shuddering breath, my hold on Elle tightening. Of course I knew she was going to retaliate. Of course she would.
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you,” I whispered in her ear, my voice deeper than usual. “Trust me, love.”
“Aw..” I glanced back up at him a second time while Scylla wove through our legs, reaching up to cup his cheek. “Too much for you to handle?”
I looked down at her darkly, backing her against the door. I leaned down to her ear, breath fanning the organ.
“Sweetheart, you have no idea what you’re getting yourself into,” I murmured before pulling away. It was okay for me to tease her because I knew she wouldn’t go far. I knew she could control herself. I was the one lacking control. She drove me wild, didn’t she? “I’ll spare you the embarrassment and get dressed now.”
I swallowed thickly, pressing one hand over my thundering heart. But I let him go, knowing that if never be able to pull away if he didn’t first.
I grabbed my clothes and went to the bathroom, sighing in relief. I really needed a cold shower now, but as I didn't want to amuse Elle, I didn't. I quickly wore my clothes, though I wanted to leave my shirt off. I decided it wasn't a good idea. The chain I had been wearing earlier, I wore it again, smiling down at the ring before I walked out.
"You are a troublemaker, aren't you?" I murmured, stopping in front of her and pulling her to me.
I discarded my blazer on his bed before letting him reel me in, my button-up shirt’s sleeves rolled up to my elbows. “Your troublemaker,” I reminded with a smile.
I kissed the base of her neck, letting my lips linger. “I love you,” I breathed her in. “My queen.”
“How are you holding up?” I whispered, hooking my fingers into his cuffs. “The voices in your head? Ariadne?”
I paused, not knowing how I would respond. I couldn’t tell her the entire truth. I couldn’t tell her it wasn’t working.
“It’s… okay,” I finally answered. “The voices are still there, but they’re bearable. I can tune them out.”
Briefly.
“Do you want me to try Singing them into submission?” I murmured, sweeping my eyes over his pained expression. “I just want you to be cleansed of this curse…”
I kissed her softly before pulling away and tugging her over to the bed. “I don’t think Singing would make it any better. And I know you do. So do I, but I have to live with it until it’s over.”
I slid onto Colton’s lap, sighing softly as I cupped his cheeks in my hands. “You’ll tell me if they get worse? Promise?”
I pressed my mouth to hers, not wanting to make that promise. Elle really knew how to get things to go her way, huh? If I made that promise, I wouldn’t be able to keep the truth.
“Colton…” I trailed off against his mouth. “That’s not an answer, love…. please…”
I pulled away, sighing and resting my forehead on her shoulder.
“I’ll tell you,” I said eventually. “I’ll let you know.”
“Good.” I pulled back and slipped off Colton’s lap, scooting back against the headboard and pulling his head gently against my chest. With the fingers of one hand, I combed out his curls, and with the other, I played with the golden chain around his neck.
I closed my eyes, draping one arm over her stomach, enjoying the feeling of being close to her like that. I listened to her heartbeat, the lovely sound that kept me alive. The sound, if stopped, that would drive me insane.
“My queen,” I murmured. “That feels nice.”
“You hold me so often…” I murmured in response, playing with a little curl near the top of his neck. “But you deserve to be comforted, too.”
I exhaled deeply. “Being near you is comfort enough,” I responded, feeling sleep creep up at me. “Knowing you’re with me is the only comfort I need.”
“I’ll always be with you…” I pressed a kiss to the top of his head and stayed there, breathing in his scent. “My love, my King, my moon, my stars. My everything.”
“Elle…” I murmured, rubbing slow circles in her side. “If something happens to me… don’t lose hope. You’re the only one who can look after the kingdom if I’m not there…”
“You’re not allowed to talk like that,” I told him firmly, but my voice broke a little. “You’re going to get better. End of story.”
