“Go on” she replied, looking him in the eyes. She was curious and partly didn’t want to know at all, not wanting him to crush her hopes of ever, you know what… she didn’t have a chance.
“Go on” she replied, looking him in the eyes. She was curious and partly didn’t want to know at all, not wanting him to crush her hopes of ever, you know what… she didn’t have a chance.
He bit the corner of his lip as he continued, eyes darting around her face as if he was drinking up her features like he was parched. "But she never got the hint, so I gave up," he said softly. "She's too good for me anyway."
“What? You too good for any woman!” She replied, punching his arm softly. It might’ve sounded like she was joking but she was being a sincere as she could possibly be. She watched his eyes as they darted around her face, her cheeks flushing and her body heating up. She bit her lip softly.
"Dri…" he breathed, so close to admitting his feelings but holding himself back. God, what was wrong with him? He would ruin their relationship with this slip-up.
But he just couldn't find it in himself to take it back or cover it up with a joke.
His eyes flicked back down to her lips as she bit them, and he couldn't bring them back up.
“Wolf…” she spoke, her lips remaining apart after she had finished. She looked across his body, biting her lip once again as an unfamiliar yet pleasant feeling spread across her body. “So, who was this girl?” She asked, bringing his eyes up to meet hers by lifting his chin gently
He swallowed again, Adam's apple bobbing nervously. "Someone you know," he said mysteriously. "She's really smart–way smarter than me. She's also really fun to hang out with. She's got her life together, and I can't remember a single project she's started that's been left unfinished." He paused for a few thundering heartbeats. "She wants to be a doctor, which is one helluva ambitious career choice. She's also really–I mean really–gorgeous, even though she frets over the simplest things she sees as flaws." He looked away, fighting the blush threatening to creep up his cheeks.
“She sounds amazing” she cooed, hanging her head down in embarrassment. How the hell could she think she actually had a shot? The girl he was talking about sounded breathtaking. She wasn’t even half of those things he had mentioned.
"She is," Wolf said wistfully. "Too bad I'll never have a chance. Might as well get over it." He shook his head, erasing his disappointment from his mind. "We… we should go. Don't want to loiter here too long, right? Ice cream'll melt."
“Wolf. I’m not that stupid” she replied. Her cheeks had turned a bright red. “Tell me who she is” she hummed, grabbing the tubs from the back and pulling out an emergency box of plastic utensils from the compartment beside her seat. She handed him a spoon, still holding the ice cream
He grabbed the spoon, recklessly letting his fingers brush against hers and linger for some time before he forced himself to pull away. "I'm gonna need the ice cream," he said, holding up the spoon and hoping she'd back off the subject. Too close. She's pushing me too close to the truth. I'd give anything for it to become reality, but… it's not meant to be.
“I’ll tell you who I like if you tell me who you like” she muttered, looking down into the tub of unopened icecream. She tried not to react when they touched for a moment, but inside she was screaming uncontrollably.
He sighed, running his fingers through his messy hair and messing it up even more. "I can't do that, Dri," he said softly, resting the back of his head on the headrest and closing his eyes.
“Tell. Me” she whined, placingg her hand in his lap. She wanted to know so bad but did she?
He went absolutely still at her touch. This was killing him. Tonight was a mistake–though how was he supposed to know that beforehand? He wanted to kiss her, needed to. Touch her and make her his. But their friendship was more important than anything. He didn't want to ruin the one good thing in his life.
He didn't want her to run away as his parents had.
He needed her to stay.
He wanted to have her.
He didn't need the pain of rejection.
“On three?” She asked, less of a question more of a demand. She let her hand linger, her body wanting her hand to move higher up but she forced her thoughts down, waiting and paying attention for any signs that might give her a clue.
"Dri." He said again, finally opening his eyes to look at her, but didn't turn his head. He was as still as a statue, the skin beneath his sweatpants burning from her lingering touch.
“Yes?” She asked, watching him cautiously, hoping she wasn’t annoying him. She shifted her hand, biting her lip as she looked down to her own lap for a quick second.
He stared at her for a while, gaze jumping all over her body as he was silent. "Do you promise to not run away from me? No matter what?" He said, trying to keep his erratic breathing under control. His heartbeat was a lost cause.
“Promise. Why would I?” She asked, looking back up at him again, her eyes filled with honesty and intent. She watched his eyes look across her body, her fave flushing when he glanced at her chest. She wanted to cover herself even more than the hoodie already did in embarrassment that he might pick out imperfections like she always did when she looked at herself.
"Then on three," he breathed, his nerves already begging him to back down. To say nevermind and come up with a random girl Audry knew. But he held his breath and prayed to God that this night wouldn't end in disaster because of him.
“One, two” she hummed, adding large spaces in between counting. Oh god, this was actually happening. This was the night that she would’ve been the one breaking their friend ship apart. “Three!” She winced, forcing herself to look him in the face
He braced himself, making his eyes meet hers, then blurted, "You."
“You” she admitted, her eyes going wide when he said the same thing she did. “Wait, what?” She asked, biting her lip as she let her hand slip to the hem of his pants and hoodie.
His eyes glazed over from beneath the contacts, and his breathing was no longer controllable. His chest heaved as he looked at her, speechless and relieved and full of disbelief all at the same time.
“Wolf… you’re not joking with me are you? Because if you are this is really cruel.” She whimpered, looking up at him hopefully. She let her fingers trace along the skin space between his pants and sweater.
