I know that this is a really old post, but man I just gotta say I agree with you 10000000% percent. We need more stories that demonstrate how you can can love someone without being IN love with them. Also I did edit the quote some (just so people know, I changed one word, but it essentially means the same thing).
But like, I love my best friend so, so much, but I'm absolutely straight. There's another friend I have, who's a guy, and I love him, too– but I have legit zero romantic interest in the guy. Like none. There are other friends I love too, who I'm not IN love with, but love is too broad of a term nowadays, which is why some older languages had more than one word for the different kinds of love.
One thing that I personally like is when there's a (usually dead) character who's idolized by everyone, but it's revealed that they weren't as pure and good as initially thought.
I honestly would like to see the reverse more. If it was done well.

A great example of this is Sir Daniel Fortesque from the game MediEvil. He's hailed as a hero that helped win a massive war against the dark forces, but he was actually just really good at telling stories about how great he was and was actually the first guy to die. However, they won, so he was hailed as a hero and a statue was made in his honor. Once he came back to life (necromancy, dark forces are back, yadda yadda), he realized he lost his jaw, meaning that he couldn't talk. Everyone sees him as a hero and he can't even say otherwise!
