Or when the most interesting character gets killed off or otherwise taken out, and gets replaced with a cardboard cutout.
Like in Divergent, all of the characters I liked besides Christina were dead by Alligent.

On an unrelated topic, relationships that would be called out as abusive if the genders were swapped. Like the ones where it's a guy and a girl, but the girl is constantly being bitchy to him and yelling at him.

Yes!! I hate this so much!! It's very prevalent in anime with tsunderes and stuff and I just get so annoyed!

And it's always to show the girl as 'independent' and 'feminist' but it's not feminist to abuse people. That's just being an asshole.
THANK YOU!
Mandatory Star Wars and Shakespeare examples:
Han and Leia argue all the time, but they're always on even footing and still show that they love each other.
Beatrice and Benedick argue like 99% of the time, but they're on even footing and stop fighting all the damn time once they're in love.
One thing I always try to do is if it's a male/female couple and I'm worried they're toxic, I just swap the genders in a scene. If it screams 'hey, this seems abusive!' I take out the scene or rewrite it. Same with same sex couples or couples with a genderqueer or nonbinary love interest: If I do some swapping and it's uncomfortable to read, I rewrite it.
Heyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy that's a good idea
I'm stealing it
Who could've seen that coming?
oh oh ALSO
Female love interests that take on an almost 'mom' like role with their broody, overly large, ultra sexy warrior man.
ENOUGH with Oedipus complexes. Its damn groooooooooooooooss.
HOLY-! WHAT!
yep.
I honestly think Freud is an idiot. It seems his answer to everything is sex.
welllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll I mean he's not really wrong. A human's base instincts are to fight, fuck, and feed.
And then there’s my basic human instincts: Food, sleep, socialize, sleep.
