Why shouldn’t Rey have the force? Anyone can have the force, otherwise the Jedi order wouldn’t exist because if the force didn’t manifest itself in random people, and Jedi aren’t supposed to get married, how are there over ten thousand Jedi?

@Mindful_Bison

I completely agree, Daisy Ridley is awesome and is a great actress, but I guess that I just kinda harbor a grudge against the movie for some reason.

No it's fine that she has the force. It's how good she was immediately. She uses Jedi mind tricks, beats Kylo in a mental force battle, just…too much. We never see her struggle to figure stuff out. the world bends and molds around her. She's not an 100% Mary Sue, but she feels like a self-insert in a fanfic.

@Masterkey

^^ I get you, and I agree. jynandor makes good points, too. But messing up doesn't mean that they AREN'T a Mary Sue, and learning things quickly doesn't mean that they ARE. I think she's a little bit boring sometimes (in her "mistakes" and in her "successes") … even though she is a bundle of joy.

And she also takes out…what, two guards? One at a time, as opposed to Kylo taking out four at a time. She panic and tried to push Kylo out, so of course that would unlock some new potential. You sometimes need to be in a position where you need your gift to unlock it. She also messes up her Jedi Mind Trick, and she only used it on a very weak minded stormtrooper, and she struggled against Kylo.

I’m sorry if that came off as rude or defensive, it’s just that Rey is really special to me (she was my first girl crush) and it sometimes is hard to see people criticize her. I’m not trying to be mean, so I’m sorry if I sound that way😔

One thing I’ve noticed is that there are many different types of Mary Sues, if you look online there’s a list of types, like Tragedy Sues, and some I’ve never even heard of. There’s a ton of different types. I’d recommend looking them up.

Oh no it's okay lol. Since you like her so much chances are she isn't as much of a Mary Sue as I thought bc most Mary Sues are neither loved nor hated. I felt all sorts of meh towards her character. I feel like she can still redeem herself, but with the Last Jedi being so weak, I'm just not sure.

One thing that bugs me is that the awareness for male Mary Stu (Marty Sues or Gary Stu) isn’t as well known. For example, I’d say that Prequels Anakin in AotC is a Marty Stu (I’m not going to disrespect Carrie’s dog). He literally kills a bunch of defensless women and children because of what three Tusken Raiders did to his mom. He has the right to be okay, but murder is never a good way to solve problems. And it’s just brushed off as nothing. He also watches Padme through the cams in her room (this is mostly addressed in the novelization of the book by R.A. Salvatore, which is actually a very good book.) Padme covers the cams out of how uncomfortable she was. He loses his lightsaber, endangers Padme by running away to Tatooine, looses his lightsaber again, and leads to a battle that destroys part of the Jedi order, with no repercussions (I think that’s the word I’m looking for). The clone wars at least shows his recklessness endangering him and him getting in trouble for it. And don’t even get me started on TPM Anakin, he’s so annoying.
