The books are long and numerous. As excellent as they are, not everyone can stand to read that much no matter how good the book is.
Also, not everyone actually likes reading. That's why the movies were made, and they're as much a part of the franchise ad the books and are very, very good.
Everyone can get into Harry Potter in different ways and if they didn't or didn't want to get into it another way, well that's why we have a fandom. To share different views and opinions and experiences.
