Winter started back towards the door. A blaster shot hadn’t been fired yet, but the growing tension in the room was begging for it to happen.
“Shiloh! Grab Hiro and go! I gotta be the last one outta this door! I can eat a few blaster rounds, you cannot! Or option two, throw any grenade you may have on your person and book it!
Meanwhile Elias was sprinting back to the ships.
“Estelle how ya hanging on? Frost I swear if you pull my hair one more time son I’ll freeze you to the bulkhead in the ship. I can’t run straight if my hair is being ripped out!”
All Elias got in response to his little rant was giggles and laughter.
(I honestly feel like Shiloh has a thermal detonator on her person or at least a smoke bomb 😂)
(Obviously)
Shiloh snickered. "Winter, I can't just explode an entire cantina. I do have this," she added, unclipping a smoke bomb and tossing it before grabbing the Hothians arm in one hand and Hiro's arm in the other and pulling them from the scene.
Estelle curled weakly into Elias. "H-Hurry," she begged quietly. "Pl-Pl-Please? She was beginning to grow pale. "It's so hot…"
hiro ran quickly "which ship!?!" he yelped
Winter stepped back and covered her face.
“That’ll work Shiloh! Go go go! Our ship is the the one on landing pad 34! Shiloh and Estelle’s ship is on 35! It doesn’t matter which on ya get into they’re connected!”
Winter felt a blaster bolt land a mark.
“We gotta go! They’re shooting now!”
She raced to the ship.
Elias had just boarded their ship. He gently set Estelle and Frost down.
“Hey Frost, bud can you close the door when our friends board? Ama might get on Auntie Shiloh’s ship. I gotta start the engines because we have to go.”
Frost walked over to the door and stood waiting to close it while Elias raced to the cockpit and started the engines. He looked through the window and saw Hiro, Shiloh, and his Wife racing towards the ships. With a few angry men right on their heels.
hiro looked behind, spinning on his heel and planting his foot he used the force to kick up dust. the air clouded with it, leaving the men sightless and coughing " now!" he yelled and raced to the 34th dock
Winter grabbed Hiro’s collar and pushed him forward.
“Nice move kid! But don’t admire your handiwork when they’re still breathing! Get on my ship! I’m boarding with Shiloh! Don’t worry about us getting separated, the ships are connected by the air lock!”
Winter raced over to dock 35 and waited for Shiloh so she could close the door.
hiro raced behind winter skidding to a halt. watching the men get closer " come on!" he yelled
Winter yelled down the ramp.
“We got it kid! This isn’t our first rodeo! Tell Frost to close the door behind you!”
Shiloh bolted through the ship's corridors until she reached the cockpit. "Everyone in?" she yelled before muttering. "They'd better be." She expertly worked the controls to close the ramp, started the engines and retracted the landing gear. "Hang on," she called as the ship rose into the air. Shiloh felt anxious taking off without her wife immediately beside her, but she knew Elias had Estelle in the safety of his ship already.
Estelle's head lolled to the side, but she slowly began to gain her senses back as the heat was eliminated. "Mmm…" she moaned quietly, holding her head. "Elias?"
Winter ran through the corridor to make sure the airlock was secure. She felt the ships rise in the air, and she sighed in relief. She muttered to herself.
“Finally leaving this forsaken planet. It really could have used just one sun. But two? Come on. Anyways. Gotta check on Estelle and Frost.”
She called back to Shiloh.
“Hey when we’re out of atmosphere, walk through the airlock! Estelle is cooling off, but she’s gonna be just fine!”
Elias turned around when her heard Estelle.
“Yes? Look at me for a second.”
Elias pursed his lips.
“You’re a little pale. Hold on. I’m going to touch your shoulder. I just want Hiro and Frost to watch.”
Elias called out to Frost and Hiro.
“Hey boys! Come watch this!”
Elias focused, and his fingers began to glow. He gently touched Estelle’s shoulder and balanced her out.
“There we go. You should be feeling balanced, and much cooler.”
Elias turned towards the airlock when he heard a click.
Winter walked through the airlock and into the cold of her ship. She looked at Elias and he pointed to the scorch mark on her chest.
“Ya got shot. Good job.”
Winter rolled her eyes and she started to unwrap the covering that hid her armor.
“Well I’m fine darling. Didn’t break the ice. But you,”
She looked Elias up and down and rolled her eyes.
“Can check later. Unwrap those dumb coverings. They make it harder to move. Hey Frost honey, come here. Let’s take the coverings off. And then you’re taking a nap.”
Frost dashed past Hiro in a frenzy to get the coverings off. Winter unwrapped him, and picked him up.
“Frost dear, your armor is looking good. Now I’m going to give you to Ada. It’s his turn to put you to sleep.”
Winter turned and smiled at Elias. He just groaned. He gently took Frost from her and walked him back to his room. Winter turned to Hiro and turned around in a circle.
“This is what I meant when I said a Hothian can eat a few blaster bolts. Our gift, which we can trace back to the Force, is ice armor. As long as we have stamina, we can keep it going. The longer we have it, the more exhausted we get. Elias and I can keep it up for days at a time, but Frost can barely manage a day. Anyways, it’s what keeps us safe. You have your saber for the offense, and we got armor for the defense. It’s a pretty decent trade off.”
Winter turned and smiled at Estelle.
“Feeling better? I know a certain Twi-Lek is very antsy to see you. But she’s piloting us out of atmosphere so we don’t have to deal with anymore ruffians from on planet.”
" sounds like a damn good deal if ya ask me." he said and looked around the ship. his breathe caught thin in the air, something hed never seen before. " the hell?" he said as more puff clouds came. he jumped back a bit
Estelle sighed with relief when Elias touched her, and she welcomed the cold back into her body. "Thanks," she murmured, smiling at him and watching the sweet family exchange. Estelle sat up straighter as the ship leveled out, signaling they'd made it out of the atmosphere and back into space. Almost immediately, she could hear the sound of footsteps as someone sprinted through the airlock, and within seconds, Shiloh appeared from the corridor.
Her eyes softened lovingly at the sight of Estelle, and she rushed to her side. "You're alright, you're not hurt?" the Twi'lek asked, smoothing her partner's blue hair and looking deep into her eyes.
"No," Estelle replied with a soft smile. "I'm alright, I promise."
"You'd tell me otherwise, right?" Shiloh pressed urgently.
"Of course," Estelle promised genuinely.
Shiloh smiled, and she removed her hand from Estelle's hair to cup her cheek and draw her in for a kiss.
"Aww, you're such a softy," Estelle teased, and Shiloh chuckled.
Winter smiled at Estelle and Shiloh. Knowing what they had both endured in the past, she was beyond overjoyed that they were finally happy. She willed her armor away and it slowly started to dissipate. When Hiro jumped back because of seeing his breath in the air she couldn’t help but laugh.
“It’s alright Hiro. It’s normal for our ship. We’re cold weather dwellers. Our original planet of origin is Hoth. So the senate, particularly the Pantoran peoples who are also cold weather dwellers, decided we needed a ship just as cold as we were. They got it for us as a gift.”
Elias walked around the corner and butted in on the conversation.
“And here’s a cool thing, you can’t see our breath!”
He looked at Winter and put his hands on his hips.
“I don’t know how you can do it. Today was probably one of the easier days because he was so tired, but that boy of ours hates going to sleep.”
Winter went over and embraced her husband.
“It’s because I’m his mother. Frost is going to do whatever he wants with you because he thinks it’s hilarious. Hun, will the armor away. We’re on the ship. You need rest.”
Elias grumbled but he willed the armor away.
“So Hiro, now that you’re off that dust bowl, mind telling us everything? It’s not like anyone here is going to jump you. If we’re being honest, we literally just repeated what we did ten years ago. And we were your age too. This honestly feels really familiar.”
Estelle laughed. "Well, I wouldn't know. I was the one being rescued, not necessarily doing the rescuing."
"I saved you then, and I'll save you now," Shiloh teased, poking Estelle's sides and caused the woman to shriek. Suddenly, a wave of the cold rolled over Shiloh and finally registered on her exposed, warm skin. She wrapped her arms around herself and shivered.
"Babe, you know you can't be in here," Estelle murmured. "Not without your warmer clothes. Go change," she insisted, kissing Shiloh's forehead sweetly and toying with the end of her lekku.
The Twi'lek smiled softly. "Alright, I'm going." She rose to her feet and headed back down the airlock into her and Estelle's ship so she could go to their chambers and retrieve her coat.
Elias snapped his fingers.
“Ah! Son you’re from Tatooine. You’re a warm weather dweller. You’re not made for this cold. Let me see. I think we have an old jacket from an even older friend in this thing somewhere. Win where do you supposed it is?”
Winter thought for a moment.
“If you’re talking about the old jacket that Essar left in our possession because he got a newer one and he said we would more than likely have to carry someone from a warmer planet in this ice box, then it’s in the bulkhead in the corridor. And you’re getting it because I am not tall enough to reach it.”
Elias laughed.
“Alright I‘ll get it. Gimme a second.”
Elias walked to the bulkhead and got the jacket.
“Here Hiro. Put this on. It’ll keep you warm enough. And since you’re with us now, you have two options. You can choose to sleep in this ship, and we have an extra bunk, or you can choose to stay with Estelle and Shiloh in their ship. But fair warning, no matter where you are, Frost will more than likely come find you and wake you up himself. You intrigue him.”
" thank you," he said softly and took the jacket hed been shivering and hardly noticed " look the man they killed… he killed my 'master' they used me to get their share and left me. since the age of eight ive been cutting off pain reseptors and some nerves just to get through the beating. in forever thankful for you saving me. and i guess i should stay in easy reach of the kid if he plans on being my alarm from now on"
Elias put his arm around Winter’s waist and they shared a concerned look. Elias spoke softly.
“Hiro… cutting off pain is never a good thing. Be it physically or mentally. Trust us, we all know. We were once like you. Pain is horrible, but you still need to be able to feel. It’s something that grows with you whether you like it or not. And how often did they beat you? Because that’s never okay. Like I said, my power doesn’t really work the best on wounds that have already healed, but it can diminish the effects that they leave. If you ever wanted to try and see if you could lessen what they’ve done to you, I’d be more than happy to see what I could do.”
Winter nodded in agreement.
“Hiro, you’re not going to have to worry about beatings or what’s going to happen to you. We’re decently off, so we have enough to take on another person. And for the record, it doesn’t matter where you sleep or how well you hide, Frost will find you. Trust me when I say this. He’ll find you anywhere. You can’t possibly hide. Elias and I believe that that’s another one of his abilities through the Force. And it’s the worst when he comes into your room to tell you about some dream he had…”
"at first it started once a week, once i started showing it didnt bother me it was once a night. then when i showed no pain at all it became me against two or three.." he said softly " and im going to be fine. ive dealt with it ill continue dealing with it. " hiro said.
Winter stepped closer and gently embraced Hiro.
“Here’s the thing. You don’t have to deal with it anymore. Tonight, you’ll get to sleep in your own bed, in the privacy of your own room, and you won’t have to worry about getting a beating. Elias and I know it’s going to take some serious time to relax, because we’ve all been there. And I know you’ll be fine, because you’ve made it this far. We’re a simple family. You have Shiloh, the assassin runaway, Estelle, the stolen child, Elias, the outcast, and me, the lone survivor. We all have different stories. We can talk about them if you wish. All you have to do is ask.”
Winter stepped back and smiled softly. Elias scratched his head.
“Well, considering you’re a growing young man, I’ve got to make the assumption you’re hungry. The kitchen and pantry are just up the hallway, right across from the control room. Grab what you want, and come back. We’ll all have story time. You tell us who and why put you in a a fighting ring, and when you found out you were force sensitive. Then we’ll tell you about us. It’s an even trade off. Sound like a deal to you?”
"yes" he said simply. hiro walked to the kitchen and looked around, he grabbed a few crackers an something that looked close to soup. he came back a minute later and sat with the group. " i dont actually know who my family really is… i know i was left with a couple from tatoonie.. though at the age of six, when i started moving things around the house with this power they sent me away. i knew they'd became scared of me. so i stayed with the old man, he had never told me his name but to call him teacher or master, so i did. an when i was eight he go shot down by the man that your friends killed.. he was the one putting me in the fights. people tend to place more money on a jedi in training, as he called me, "
Elias sighed deeply.
“Yeah we know how the Force scares people. And we know how people who wield it scare people more than the Force itself does. I saw that you had a saber? I assume you built it yourself. May I look? I know it’s going to sound weird, but I have a weapon make of Kyber. It’s simple, and more to the use of an axe, but when I need too, I channel the Force through it. Winter however, creates her own weapons. She envisions it, and boom, it’s made out of ice. As long as she has the stamina to keep them up, they won’t break. That’s her part of the Force power. I got the healing aspect. Anyways, Shiloh! Estelle! Do you want anything to eat from our pantry? I know for a fact it’s very different than yours!”
hiro handed his saber over, watching the people move about
Shiloh returned, still shivering, but now she was clad in a leather jacket that seemed to be lined with something fuzz and extremely warm-looking. "I know that I'm alright for now, thank you," she politely declined. "Estelle, babe, do you want anything?"
Estelle popped up from her seat, looping an arm around Shiloh's waist and pulling her along. "I'm not sure yet. What do the two of you have in there? If nothing else, I'll take some caf."
Winter thought for a moment.
“We do have fruit, and a variety of meat from a variety of different creatures. Such as a nuna. The Pantorans like to supply our food. I have no clue most of the time what’s back there. You’re free to look though. I’ll put some caf on, because we all need it.”
