I've made that promise before, too. The words danced on his tongue, begging to be let loose. He had enough self control the keep them down. The only thing that really showed was his normally hard and bored eyes softening slightly. But these two have been in each others heads. That's all she would need.
(She's never been deep enough in his brain to find that memory)
She sighed, scooting over and opening her arms for a hug. That was honestly the best she could offer, without knowing more. So that's what she did.
He scooted the final foot or so to meet her, sighing heavily as he wrapped his arms over her shoulders. He seemed to almost be dead weight in her hug.
She rested her chin on his shoulder, holding him tightly. "Fuck the Kaiju." She said simply, giving him a careful squeeze.
"I'd rather not," he mumbled. "Killing them sound fun, though."
(You made a character sheet for yourself and now I'm inspired
Invalid Character)
She snorted wryly, shaking her head. "How dare you point out my verbal blunder. But yeah, killin' 'em is fun."
"Sorry for getting so depressed out of the blue," he said, pulling away slightly to look at her. "Shit sucks sometimes."
((You're only barely a year older than me???? I assumed you were like. At least many a moon older. Also, ADHD buds))
"Nah, you're good." She gave him a lopsided smile, eyes still a tad bit sad(that rhymes). "Shit really does suck, don't it?"
He began to stare wistfully past her shoulder, reminiscing on his last partner. "You would've liked Rose. She was more of a smartass."
(I already have ache scars ;-;)
((I started up this night routine to avoid more acne scars and break outs, and it's insane how well it works))
"Those are always the best people." She studied his face as he looked off, her smile turning just a bit sad.
"We named the robot Hardhat," he continued, a small smile growing on his face. "'Cause he had a ball and chain for a hand. We had 5 kills in a month, which was a record for a while. Then…" Duncan seemed to struggle to speak for a moment.
"You don't-have to keep going." Cassie punctuated the middle of her sentence with a hesitant pause, trying to figure out what to say. Words weren't quite her thing when it came to comfort, that was for sure.
"Nonono, I'm fine." He shook his head, glancing over at her for a moment before returning his gaze at the wall. "There were a pair of 5s off the coast of Canada. It was a big thing, because they went after Vancouver. And….one of them could spit acid. We were wrestling with one on the ground and didn't know the other was about to spit until….' He seemed to struggle again, blinking away a couple of tears that were trying to form. "She had enough time to look over at me before the entire left side of the cockpit collapsed. I had to fight alone for nearly 15 minutes until Police Force (A veteran duo they know) showed up to save me. It nearly killed me to control that robot for so long."
(So one person can't control a robot for too long or their brain is damn near tore to shreds. It takes a miracle to do 10 minutes alone, so 15 is damn near impossible)
(I have to have at least one badass, c'mon)
((Gotta say, I'm lovin' your badasses. I'm typing a response on another tab btw))
(They're the big sad badasses)
((They gotta be. Otherwise, they're usually just assholes))
"Duncan…" Her voice was quiet, unusually soft as she hesitantly reached out and took his hand. Small things clicked into place, now that she had a reason to connect them to. Fifteen minutes. He'd held for fifteen minutes, alone. "God, I-sorry doesn't even begin to cover this."
((I know how character depth works! It's like the only thing I have any knowledge on))
"I was in the hospital for 6 months. I thought I was done for. Hurt to think. I really just wanted to end it. But I knew she'd kick my ass when I got over to the otherside if I killed myself. So when I got the greenlight, I came back to the only thing I know." His eyes began to dull slightly, looking 50 years older once again. "The deadliest version of Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots there is."
(And now there's a reason why their relationship hasn't progressed father than hugs and holding hands)
