“Somewhere else would be cold, dark, and lonely. I’m rather tired of staying in the same place for so long.” Sinistra seemed to start reforming into her humanoid form again.
“Somewhere else would be cold, dark, and lonely. I’m rather tired of staying in the same place for so long.” Sinistra seemed to start reforming into her humanoid form again.
Stardew turned and studied Sinistra.
"What or who are you, by the way? Foxglove's going to ask you these questions if not me."
“My name is Sinistra. Well, the name of this life I have created for myself. My true name would be unpronounceable for most of the life this reality has to offer.” Sinistra had reformed back to a humanoid fairly quickly; showing the same appearance as she did before she was attacked.
“What I am..that story goes back billions and billions of years ago. I suppose you don’t have that long though, do you?”
Aiday stared, "Are you an elder god?" she asked in awe.
Turning back to Aiday, Sinistra seemed to laugh, but stopped herself to speak. “No. I am not. Though they are out there, I am not one of them.”
Stardew sat down, interested. She unsheathed her sword, but put it in her lap.
"Fascinating. I've met gods before, but they all were in decline. Too few followers, too many untrained demigods to bring glory to their name. Where are these elder gods?"
"We see them sometimes," Aiday said. "But many of them hide away and don't associate with us."
"Typical gods," Stardew said. "But when they want you to take in their hopelessly incompetent demigod offspring, they'd grovel at your feet." She shrugged. "I don't have a very positive opinion of gods or demigods, but maybe I've just not seen yours. What do yours look like?"
"Just like people I suppose. I am one and I don't look very different do I?" She looked at herself.
Stardew's eyebrow raised. "Don't tell Foxglove that you're a god or he'll never leave you alone. He's fascinated with magical creatures and magical beings. Do you have 'powers' or is that just for the lower-level riffraff I deal with?"
Her eyes widened at the term "riffraff" but she composed herself. "I do have abilities, though not very powerful ones. I can bring good luck and I can heal most nondeadly injuries."
Stardew nodded. "Good luck and nondeadly injuries are nice. You can go pretty much anywhere and help. Have I offended you with riffraff?" she added. "Perhaps I've met one of your friends."
"I am not offended," she smiled. "I don't know if you have or not. I am not one of the more popular of the gods you could say. I have strange beliefs and do things differently from most of my kind."
"That's ridiculous! Why aren't you popular? You seem great to me," Raven said, then immediately cringed. She barely knew Aiday.
Stardew gave a half-bow. "Ah, I see. You do not remind me of those I deal with. They grovel at my feet because they have nowhere else to go. You clearly have options."
She turned back to Sinistra.
"So, brief rundown, if you can. What are you? I don't know about Miss Raven and Miss Aiday, but I know I have at least a year to blow off my life. And it's either me or Foxglove, who's far more inquisitive."
"That's ridiculous! Why aren't you popular? You seem great to me," Raven said, then immediately cringed. She barely knew Aiday.
Aiday smiled softly. "They think my work is beneath them. So, of course, they look down on me for what I do."
“Well, putting it briefly, I am an abomination to this world. And it’s very true, my..” Sinistra paused, searching for the correct words. “..original form is rather incomprehensible, regarding both mortal and immortal eyes.”
“My kind doesn’t really have a name. Some humans call us eldritch horrors. Which is rather fitting, given how I first interacted with life that was not my own. On another note, I shouldn’t really say ‘my kind’, because we’re not really a species; more so a collection of creatures. Even my..siblings.. are very different compared to me. My creator, or father, if you’d rather, was also very different.” Finally, she added with some extras, “we don’t really have genders either. I have chosen my voice to be what you consider female, but know that I have gone most of my life without a voice. I only discovered the concept a few thousand years ago; pitiful numbers compared to my lifespan.”
Stardew produced a notepad and scribbled quickly. She was finished in a matter of moments after Sinistra's recital.
"Creator? I'm technically 'created' so I'm always – I need to stop hanging around Foxglove. Anyway." She turned to Aiday. "I'm going to pry here and ask who looks down on you and why your work is beneath them. You also can answer the creator question, all of this is totally voluntary," she added over her shoulder, addressing the last remark to both. There was a hint of playful self-deprecation in her eyes, but she was smiling.
Sinistra chuckled, lightly. “My creator is long gone. My brethren and I tore apart and absorbed the creator billions of years ago. Or in more mortal terms, ate the creator. Technically we weren’t really eating however, more so collecting new energy.”
Aiday played with her hair shyly. "I help you of course!" she said. "The… the others think I'm rather odd but I don't mind." She looked up at them, letting her hair fall away from her face. "It's because I'm a Sikh," she said seriously, "The others don't care about any God. And that's why we're different."
"What's a Sikh?" Raven asked curiously.
Her hands fluttered around her legs. We believe in a God that is out there. They want us to go outside of ourselves in order so we can be close, one day be one. We must forget ourselves in order to help all others, because we all have God within us. We are separate so we do not get caught in the tangle of material things." We keep reminders of what we believe with us at all times." She fingered a steel bracelet hanging loosely on her wrist.
Stardew scribbled some more and with a click of her fingers made the notebook disappear.
"Fascinating. I'm sure Foxglove will come crashing through the bushes at any moment – ow!"
She hopped up and down, rubbing her ankle with a resigned expression on her face.
Sinistra glanced over, tilting her head. "What happened?' She asked, although carried little concern in her voice, more so curiosity.
"Sebastian," Stardew said in a resigned tone, but at the name her eyes twinkled with playfulness.
