She turned even more red. "Not… necessarily. You'll be traveling around while I'm doing…whatever."
She turned even more red. "Not… necessarily. You'll be traveling around while I'm doing…whatever."
He gave her a grin. "If its bullshit, no one will notice if I'm gone."
Ass. You just played me. "…I will."
"That's kind of the point, isn't it?" His smile turned into a small frown. "What, do you not want me to stay?"
She ran her fingers through her hair. "That's not what I'm trying to say! I do want you to stay. But with this ambassador job, you'll be gone while I'm stuck here alone with a bunch of idiots trying to kill each other by the hour."
Don't offer the beach house. You know he'll refuse. Just let it go
But I can't.
"Well, I can, like, buy a house near here, so I'm close by when I'm not working."
Not what I meant. Tess got up, wincing with the movement. "I need to do something real quick."
He stood up too, grabbing her hand. "No, for real, Tess. What's wrong?"
She refused to look at him. "It's stupid and selfish. Just don't worry about it."
He didn't let go of her hand. "Please?"
A muscle in her jaw fluttered. "Do you know how much has been taken away from me throughout my life? So much that I've just grown to live with it. I find something–and it's taken away. But I…" She sighed. "I'm just being an idiot."
"But I'm doing this job to be with you," he said, confused.
"Like I said, I'm being an idiot." She went to pull away.
He pulled her to him, wrapping her up in a gentle hug. "I'm not gonna leave, you, Tess."
She pressed her face against his chest. "Do you really need a job to stay?" she whispered.
He tilted his head. "I don't wanna just pawn off of you."
"I have more money than I need, being a 'hero' and all. Or…"
He looked down at her. "You just don't wanna be lonely, do you?"
She fully flushed. "I–well–not–" she sighed. "No…" she muttered.
He kissed the top of her head. "If you really want me to, I guess I can just chill out here."
She sighed again. "But do you really want to? I'm being the stereotypical emotional woman, and it's not a good look for me."
"Would I like do work? Sure, I guess. But if it means more time with you, fuck it."
She tilted her head up to face him. "I don't deserve you."
"And why is that?"
She snorted. "Haven't I already expressed how undeserving I am of anything? Dirty street rat? Petty thief? Government wanted criminal? Mafia? Any of these ringing any bells?"
