Mm, whether we do templates or not, I think still knowing the basic things about each other's character, such as how old they appear (how old they are doesn't necessarily matter, for example one could be 20 but suffer from dwarfism and appear 10), their name, and gender
Yeah, I agree. What age range should we aim for?
well, since they're in an academy, I'm going to say… anywhere between 10 and 20 is good.
Okay, cool. Here's my child:
Name: Emrys Winter (pronounced Em-rees)
Age: 17, looks 16
Gender: Female
Basic Looks: Short, slightly wavy black hair cut choppy around her chin. Large wire-frame glasses. Grey-blue eyes. Tanned olive skin. Faint freckles along the bridge of her nose. Medium height.
Name: Loren Shaw
Age: also 17, looks 15-16
Gender: female
Appearance: On the shorter side of the human population, she's ever so slightly chubby, not too much tho, her skin is on the darker side, but not super dark. Her brown hair frames her face nicely and ends just below her shoulders. Longer than average fingers.
She looks nice! Do you want to start?
Thanks! And sure, I'll try to!
Loren stared at the screen of her phone, her fingers scrolling down the list of dorms. Her name had to be on there somewhere, if she could just find it. Loren, Loren, where was it? Oh, finally. There it was. Loren Shaw, room 32, with an… Emrys Winter. Huh, okay then. She grasped the handle of her suitcase in one hand and rolled it over to the reception desk to pick up her keys. "Hello… I'm here for the keys of… room 32. I'm Loren, Loren Shaw," she said, licking her lips to moisten them. The receptionist had a bored look on her face as she nodded and rifled through a box of keys and handed her two keys on one of those circular key chain things. Both had the number "32" engraved on it. She walked back over to room 32, her suitcase still in her hand. With her free hand, she unlocked the door and opened it. Wow, it was so pretty! And… large, she'd never been in a dorm room so she didn't know it'd be so big!
Emrys was just finishing putting her stuff in the bathroom when she heard someone open the door. Must be her roommate, Loren Shaw. Emrys wasn't too excited about having a roommate, but she also didn't know what to expect. Maybe it could be fun! She walked out of the bathroom to see a short girl with brown hair standing in the doorway, looking around in wonder.
"Uh… hi. You're Loren, right?" Emrys asked, lingering in the doorway to the bathroom. Then she decided that was too awkward and walked over to her bed. She sat down and pushed her glasses up her nose.
"Uh… hello, yeah, that would be me… aha," she replied. God, why do I have to be so awkward? she thought. "So… you're Emrys I presume?" Loren asked. "Since we're going to be stuck together all year, want to be friends?"
"I am Emrys." She smiled. "As for that other question, " she continued, her eyes sparkling, "I don't think I know you well enough to decide that just yet. But you are going to be my number-one acquaintance until I do know you better."
"Okay aha," Loren was a bit embarrassed, perhaps she shouldn't be so trusting? "Seeing as you probably know this place better than I do, where can I put my stuff?" she gestured to her suitcase.
"There's a dresser next to your bed," she pointed at it, "and a shelf in the bathroom as well. " She gestured a a shelf against the wall. "And I'm pretty sure that's for us to share, unless someone stole the other one." She smiled at Loren.
"Okay thanks," and she got right to unpacking. Why was she here again? Oh yeah, because apparently being able to illusion things wasn't normal. All her friends back home could do it, so she hadn't known that until a week ago. She found her laptop and tossed that lightly onto her bed, and the charger along with it. Some notebooks, those could go on the bed for now as well… finally getting around the the bathroom supplies, she carried them to the bathroom. There wasn't much, so it was relatively easy to do.
Emrys watched as Loren unpacked. She was happy that Loren was so friendly, and was partly regretting her earlier words. At least Loren wasn't mean, or bossy, or commanding… Yet. Emrys would simply have to wait and see.
There was a backpack, empty of course in her suitcase, and which she pulled out. It was dark purple and light pink gradiented all over, and specks of white for stars; the backpack was galaxy themed. she stuffed her notebooks in there, and then put the backpack back inside her suitcase. She then plugged in her laptop and charger, and set it on a bedside stand to sit.
"Uh… What's your schedule look like?" Emrys asked, breaking the silence. "I heard that roommates had most, if not all, of their classes together, but I don't know if that was real."
"Uh… I have to do freaking math first class…" Loren groaned. "What about you?"
"Uh…" Emrys pulled her phone out of her pocket and unlocked it. "Same. Looks like I heard correctly." She turned off her phone and set it on the bed next to her. "I don't see why we need to learn math if we have magic. Seems like learning to control the powers gifted to us would be more useful than… solving for x, or figuring out the y-intercept, or what length the third side of a triangle is. You know?" Emrys looked at Loren. "Sorry about that rant. I just don't like math."
"Nah, don't worry. I'm 99.99 percent sure that I'm going to fail it," she made a face. "I mean, at least we have a class that Deals with magic in some way… ugh," Loren collapsed onto her bed, back-first and stared up at the ceiling.
"Not good at math?" Emrys asked, crossing her legs. "I can help you. I'm good at it, I just don't like it. It's always so boring. Especially when we could be doing more useful things." She paused. "Anyway, why're you here? What 'special power' do you possess?" Emrys asked, smiling slightly.
Loren sat up at her question. "Well, first off there's this…" she trailed off as she took of her coat, revealing her tucked in wings. And then there's this, she closed her eyes and focused on projecting the thought into her roommate's mind.
"Wings?" Emrys exclaimed in excitement. "Oh, that's so cool!" She jumps at the voice in her head. "Wait, you're telepathic or something? And an angel?" Emrys grinned. "That's pretty awesome, Loren."
"I'm not an angel," she smiled softly. "But yeah, thanks!" she put her coat back on. "What about you?"
