Thanks!! Let me know if there's anything I should change about him ^^
Name: Mingzhi Biàn (meaning "understanding of philosophy" and "rules" or "hasty")
Nickname: Myrkul (for those of you who haven't played D&D or BG3, it's pronounced "mer-cole"). His self-chosen alias.
Age: Twenty-nine
Gender: Cis male
Likes: Strawberry milk, skill-based video games, table-top roleplay, cooking, ceramics.
Dislikes: Large crowds, social media, reporters, bland food, doctor appointments.
Fears: Tight spaces, hospitals, humiliation, losing someone important again.
Personality: Mingzhi is typically calm and slow-to-anger; a gentle giant and incredibly charismatic to boot. A good listener, advice-giver, and generally all-around supportive person, great at forming surface-level friendships that he doesn't have to sink much personal time into. He's a social introvert who keeps secrets close to his chest—even those including benign information about himself.
Despite his unhurried and patient aura, Mingzhi is quick-witted and brazen enough to make split-second decisions when he must. He carries a certain air of self-confidence that draws others to him, and he keeps a clear head that allows him adapt to changes quickly.
Perhaps most notably, Mingzhi is fiercely protective. He has a bleeding heart and hates to see others suffer. He'd rather shoulder the burden all on his own and break when no one is watching.
(Somehow he has chill dad energy paired with supportive mom energy.)
Backstory: Mingzhi was young when his powers first manifested. Very young. What should have been a blessing was tempered by his mother's strong fear of him, which brought discomfort and self-consciousness into his early life. Fearing her child was possessed by a devil, Mingzhi's mother begged the church to perform exorcisms on her boy in the hopes that it would "cure" his powers.
Unsurprisingly, it accomplished nothing of the sort. It did, however, catch the attention of a government official who happened to be present at one such exorcism.
Fascinated by a child with the ability to reshape his bones, the official approached Mingzhi's mother to offer him a place in a developmental research program designed to study various bone diseases. Though hesitant at first, Mingzhi's mother quickly caved to the idea.
Mingzhi was brought to a facility where he was given a room and many various personal items and clothing to make it feel like home. Everything was startling and new, and having a room to himself did nothing to hide the clinical nature of the facility beyond his door, through which anyone could enter at any time.
And enter they did. For over five years Mingzhi was studied and forced to undergo unethical experimentation in the pursuit of new medical treatments. It was discovered Mingzhi was not only capable of reshaping bones, but of regenerating them entirely. The staff of scientists and doctors were delighted. They continued to push and push at the boy's limits, trying to figure out to apply his supernatural powers to common bone diseases, often extracting bone marrow to further study.
Eventually, something had to break. It just so happened to be Mingzhi.
The timing couldn't have been better. A violent episode after another painful marrow extraction proved to be just the distraction that lab assistant Annalise needed to launch the facility into absolute chaos. She, along with a small team of scientists who had been protesting Mingzhi's cruel treatment since the start, decided to finally take matters into their own hands and help the boy—now young teen—escape.
Annalise fled with him as far as the city, where she told him to run and hide and never look back. Dreading the thought of ever returning, Mingzhi took her advice.
It was in the city that he first encountered a group of friends, gifted with powers not unlike himself. Being the eldest of the group he quickly fell into the role of "cool older brother", despite his own dismal living situation, which he kept secret.
Then, at age sixteen, he helped save the world. But he also lost a friend—an incident that left scars in his heart and drove him to isolate himself from the others. Though Mingzhi does not know the details of what happened that day, he blames himself for not being there; for not being stronger.
Maybe that's why Mingzhi never stopped trying to save the world. Instead, he became an unofficial hero—a vigilante, of sorts, further developing his powers and learning to forgive himself.
He's managed to make a life for himself; one he's content with.
Abilities: Osteokinesis (metamorphic and prehensile bones)
Looks: (Original Drawing) | (Original Drawing 2)
Very tall (6'2") and muscular, with the physique of someone who works out regularly. His skin is tanned and his left arm is tattooed. He has a squared jaw with lower cheekbones, slanted mono-lid eyes, dark irises and dark brows. His hair is black and shoulder-length, parted at the side and generally found tied back in a high ponytail or bun. Mingzhi also has thin, dark facial hair on his jaw and upper lip.
Mingzhi enjoys dressing business-casual whenever he's not busy working in his clay-stained apron. Dark button-up blouses (with the sleeves almost always rolled up to his forearms), slacks, a belt, and plain dress shoes.
When he works he tends to wear far more simple jeans and sweaters/old t-shirts, specifically those with faded rock band logos on them.
Whilst out and about as a vigilante, he covers himself in a black cloak and a plain black face mask.
Other:
- He's incredibly sentimental and likes to collects mementos, such as old movie tickets, pressed flowers, signed posters, etc.
- Lives in an old abandoned coach yard. It's much nicer than it sounds.
- He's a potter with a pen name: T. Hu (The initials of one of his D&D characters, Tao Huang.) His most purchased work is tea sets, although he's been known to take on various commissions.
- He's bilingual! Mandarin and English.
- Very focused on his personal health. He works out regularly, eats well, and takes supplemental vitamins to help with his calcium intake.
- The reason he's significantly older than a lot of the others is because bones generally stop growing at the age of sixteen, which he would've been when he helped save the world. He wouldn't have had a full handle on his powers until then.
- The song that inspired me in his creation: Mirage, cover by Sha Shu Shuo.
- As briefly mentioned in his backstory, Mingzhi isolated himself from the rest of the group after Zachary's supposed death. He isn't impossible for them to find, but he doesn't stay in contact. He wouldn't respond to any messages unless he felt it was important.
On that last note, how exactly are we approaching this? Are they all going to be at the scene of the fire, where they recognize the friend?
