I'm just gonna congratulate you on being the first D&D forum post since… August 30th apparently!
Mimics also apparently can form into entire colonies which is cool.

that reminds me of the bag of devouring. imagine putting a mimic into a trick bag and being like, "there's a 50% chance you'll be sucked inside and eaten, and if you get something out, there's a 50% chance you'll pull out a mimic."

They can learn common speak if given the invironment. There's a creation myth about some wizard expiriment, which there seems to be for most creatures honestly. So, you could absolutely have talking mimics in old wizard tower.
I also really love the idea of taming a baby mimic and that being you main source of tools. Like, the baby has to do a preformance check to see how accurate they can get to an actual tool. So, you ask for a sword, and you could either get a dull almost useless one or a sharp shining one. Obviously they're skill would increase with pratice.

XD I just love the thought of taming/befriending a mimic. And, with the extra strength adhessive they have so they can stick to cielings?

"It's fine; we'll be able to track them."
"How?!"
"I threw my knife at them."
"And, that helps us how? They could have ditched it!"
"Just scry for it. I assure you, it's holding on for dear life right now."

lmao, my mimic is actually for my players to find, i kind of imagined it like:
"hey look at this cool knife i found in the pawn shop, you think it's cursed?"
"huh, weird."
a while later at a tavern or smth.
"hey where's my drink… and my knife… and my party…"
