Kenku
Kenku are a clever and social race, known for their skilled mimicry and perfect artisan craftmanship. They can live to around 60 years old and reach adulthood around 12. Kenku are a social race, that gravitate to busy cities.
Between 90 and 120lb; they are exceedingly light
Due to their restless spirit and inability to cope with routine, they tend to lean towards chaos.
• They have a restless spirit prone to wanderlust; they dream of flight.
• Kenku can perfectly mimic any sound they hear, allowing them to reproduce speech in a variety of languages. They also have a talent for learning and memorising details.
• Kenku are social. They may show social mimicry even as adventurers; they tend to seek out a companion to emulate and follow. They will mimic the voice and words of their chosen companion.
• They do not cope well with routine, strict order, or boredom.
• They may struggle to improvise when under pressure.
• Due to their skill in replicating existing things, they make excellent scribes and artisans.
• Due to their eidetic memories they make excellent spies, scouts and messengers. Thieves guilds may employ kenku as lookouts and messengers.
The kenku live in flocks with no clear leader; these are collective lead. The picking-order within flocks is determined by games of 'chicken'. Flocks may disperse across wide areas but come together in times of danger to protect one another, or for significant events, such as mourning a loss. Kenku flocks will often gravitate to areas with a source of food, shiny treasures, or income; once they are settled somewhere it can be hard to convince them to leave. A flock of kenku spread across a city can spread a message very quickly.
• Kenku like to live in towers and other tall structures; they may seek out towering ruins or cities to live in. Their light weight allows them to live in rickety structures.
• Kenku name themselves after a variety of noises. Those who wish to appear intimidating may choose sounds made by weapons, those who live in cities may adopt noises they hear such as animal call. Some may adopt noises made as part of their craft. Other races will refer to them with words describing this noise.
The kenku once served a mysterious, powerful entity on anther plane of existence. Some believe they were minions of Grazz't, while others say that they were scouts and explorers for the Wind Dukes of Aaqa. Accordng to legend the kenku betrayed their master, unable to resist the lure of a beautiful treasure; they plotted to steal the treasure and escape tot hte Maeraial Plane. They were discovered and three curses were imposed upon them. First, their wings withered; binding them to earth. Secondly, because their ingenuity turned them to scheming the spark of creativity was stolen from their souls. Finally, their voices were taken. Then they were banished to the mortal plane.
A kenku character may be motivated by:
• Their restless nature, wonderlust, or longing to fly.
• They may be survivors of a decimated flock, feeling unmoored.
• They may be seeking a way to fly again or to master some other form of magic.
