Bahron
Large colonial city
The largest city outside of the Prominence Empire, colonized in the Shiara Desert.
Most standard laws. Nothing out of the ordinary, not even segregation laws (which could be expected of humans). The only real issue is of money, as many places use gold, silver, etc., but money can change hands very quickly. If stocks get volatile, then people could win or lose money to the point where businesses could fail overnight. Despite the fact that it's a colony, most everyone deals in money. Some have come out more successful than some Mordarian nobles.
"Prosperity in the face of hardship" (official motto)
تعال للمستعمرين ، إجازة بسبب المستعمرين.
taeal lilmustaemarin , 'iijazatan bsbb almustaemrina.
"Come for the colonizers, leave because of the colonizers" (everyone else)
(This was a shitty Google Translation. If there comes a time where someone can help me fix it, that would be greatly appreciated.)
Gold, silver, bronze. Everything works on hard cash. No refunds, no IOUs, and the only the local stock market (a branch office of the one in Prominence) uses paper slips. When the day closes, those who made out get hard currency transferred to the bank. Withdrawals and deposits are common, banks had to be streamlined to make up for the influxes of clients.
Common, Shiaran, Thievescant in the seedier areas
150,000; most of those inhabitants of the Shiara Desert.
Soccer, fencing (for the nobles), shooting and archery, sand surfing.
Hot, dry, unpleasant for everyone except those who are used to the heat.
Sandstorms are infrequent, but they happen. Everyone battens down the hatches in those cases, and they can last anywhere from an hour to a day or two. Anything longer than that is a sign of the end times for most people.
Shiara Desert, on top of a massive underground aquifer surrounded by stone. The ground under the city is solid, but there is a literal river of sand surrounding the city like a moat. No one knows what causes it, but it is very slowly wearing away at the base of the city.
There are no professional farms, most people grow stuff within their property for personal use. All other crops are imported because the colonists have "high-class tastes" compared to everyone else. There aren't any Mordarian crops that grow in the desert, and the colonists simply CAN'T live without the comforts of home.
Those who do grow things grow melons, rosemary, some cacti for their pears and blossoms, etc.
the northwestern edge of the Shiara desert, close to the steppe, but also close to desert trade routes.
Rather than the usual colonization story of people running away from an oppressive ruler or being sent by their ruler to look for valuable resources, Bahron was founded because someone literally decided to bury their head in the sand. Two nameless adventurers from the Prominence Empire were on sabbatical in the Shiara Desert (a poor decision, really), they had run out of water, and were hopelessly lost on their way to the next village. Delirious from dehydration, one of them decided to stick their head in the sand to cool off. He felt better and dug deeper to cool off everything else. At his feet, water began to bubble up from the sand. They had found water! The two adventurers set up an outpost later on, and then settlers from Mordaria created a city.
Great Wyvern War
The city of Bahron, being the largest city in the Shiara Desert and outside of the Prominence Empire, is a beacon for humanity's attempts to expand their home outside of the northern continent. It's mostly Mordarians that live there, but the major minority (excuse the oxymoron) includes Shiarans. They were hired to help work and for protection from desert wyverns. Dragons are a once-in-a-blue-moon occurrence, and any that are spotted don't stick around for more than a few minutes before fading over the horizon. Shiarans have the best knowledge of the vast dunes and have threatened more than a few slackers to leave them buried up to their necks for the scorpions.
Iron sand actually exists under the surface towards the more active volcanoes, but mining excursions haven't been able to find any. They were all repulsed by the heat and thick, glassy deposits surrounding them. You can tell how close you are to a volcano depending on how many "scales" there are. "Scales" are the colloquial term for hunks of smooth glass, worn down by the high winds to an almost mirror polish. These don't fetch that high a price, mostly due to their commonality and the fact that black sand can be far more useful.
Nothing in terms of actual production. There is a sand-bagging facility that ventures out to gather either regular sand or the highly dangerous black sand (can and will give third-degree burns to unprotected skin). The sand is used in decorations and can be melted down to make obsidian (very poor quality, honestly better used as regular sand). Black sand fetches a good price, especially for landscapers and designers, or people who want to give their back patios some "flair."
There is a standing militia within the city, and they are mostly there to keep the peace and fight off any desert wyverns that come towards the city. There are only around 30 tanks in the city (based on the FT-17 Renault), but a militia of 5,000. They're fully armed with the standard Mordarian loadout, and there are defenses on the walls and within the city proper.
Bahron is sitting on top of a large underground volcano and a seemingly endless supply of water, meaning that their electricity comes from geothermal power. There is one large powerplant in the city, and it continuously serves the city every day of the year. Blackouts are caused by powerline failures, though there were a few times that sand from a storm jammed some large generators. Power was off for a week and a half as workers fixed the problem, and soon, sand shields were installed to mitigate the issue.
Wood, metal, some mud-brick housing on the very outskirts. There are large skyscrapers in the center, but most are simply furnished by local Shiarans. The Prominencians (or as they call themselves, Bahronese) try to have as many creature comforts as they can. Appliances, furniture, food, all of it is imported because they don't have the means to make their own. Mining attempts have found no metals, and the red sand around volcanoes is colored by clay (or so they think).
No actual farms, just private gardens that people have at home.
