When the potential for the Death Stones becomes known, many are killed for the secret locations/access to the Stones

The preservation of their history and honoring the dead.

Their goal is to honor people and dragons. They perform a type of burial ceremony where the body is turned into a Death Stone.

Much later in the story, it is discovered that the Death Stones retain magic powers and many are stolen in order to obtain those powers.
