Soraya once lived happily with her younger sister and parents in a small village in Neyri's countryside. However, when Soraya was 10 and her sister 5, their parents were infected with Ash Blight Syndrome. Her father turned Aberrant and killed her mother, but was able to retain his sanity long enough to send Soraya and her sister away before being shot down by Dawnwing Organization Liberators. Soraya and her sister escaped the burning remains of their village and moved to a small cottage in the nearby forest, where Soraya raised her sister alone ever since. Though their lives were more frugal and simple than before, they were happy for they still had each other.
Years later, Soraya's sister came to her with a surprise: she wanted to move to the nearby large city to study acting. Now of age, the 19-year-old Soraya opted to join the Dawnwing Organization, as it would allow her to both support and protect her sister's dream. Despite now being separated by miles of ocean, the two sisters kept in touch often with letters and other correspondences.
As a Liberator in the Dawnwing Organization's 10th Liberation, Soraya became renowned among her peers for her genuine empathy and kindness, earning her equal praise from those who saw it as a welcome balm from the unforgiving nature of military life and ridicule from those who scoffed at what they saw as naivety. Those in the latter camp –including Dawnwing Organization leadership – gave her the derogatory nickname "Bleeding Heart." Though this opposition discouraged Soraya at first she never wavered, believing everyone deserved kindness.
Two years later, Soraya's squadron embarked on what would become an ill-fated mission in which their captain became infected with Ash Blight Syndrome. Though they were under strict orders to immediately put down anyone infected, Soraya hesitated as she couldn't bear to kill her captain. Unfortunately, this proved to be the squadron's undoing as their captain turned Aberrant a few weeks later and went on a violent rampage, escaping off the island and heading to the very same city Soraya's sister was studying at. Upon hearing of her mistake, Soraya rallied her squadron and rushed to the city in a panicked attempt to stop their former captain.
However it was too little too late, as they arrived to find the city in flaming ruins. Soraya rushed through the streets to find her sister, soon arriving at the university grounds to be greeted with the sight of her sister impaled on her former captain's claws. Overcome with grief and rage, Soraya went on a rampage of her own, killing not only her former captain but also many more Aberrants – including an enormous terrestrial one – with the help of her Tarand Omid. Thus she singlehandedly ended the Aberrant invasion, though not without immense cost.
Due to this incident, Soraya was demoted to an outcast two weeks after the mission's end. Soraya continued to be haunted by her sister's death in the years to come, though she resolved to carry on her sister's memory and never waver in her kindness – for now she was in the company of those who desperately needed it more than ever.
