Name: Leonard Shadedweller
Species: Shadow Dragon
Age: Somewhere in his 12,000's
Gender: Male
Weaknesses: Leonard's greatest weakness is his son. He will do anything in his power to keep Seere safe, so if someone held Seere 'hostage', they could very well make Leonard do whatever they wanted, just to get Seere back to him. Very well lit areas tend to render his shadow form useless.
Bio/History: Leonard had a mate once, his lovely Eshai. Both had lived in a mountainous region. Here, they had their first clutch, 3 dragon chicks in all. The beasts had only lived for only a few years, when their lives were cut short.
Murderous humans entered the cave, killing all that was within sight, and taking any treasure they found. Leonard returned too late, but not so late as to save one of their chicks, Seere.
The huge dragon, in his sadness, rage, and desperation, Leonard fought his way through the ranks of humans, scooping up his only son, and managing to escape once again.
Mate:
Eshai - Deceased
Chicks:
Greltha, smaller than her sister but bigger than her little brother Seere - Deceased
Vaam'da, larger than her sister and brother - Deceased, or it is figured she is
Seere, the smallest, considered the runt of the clutch - Alive
Powers/Abilities: Leonard has the ability to breath shadowy flames. This fire instead of being burning hot, burns a freezing temperature. This flame seems to also bring an overwhelming sense of dread, often frightening weaker/younger creatures. Can take on a shadowy form, which makes him move silently and blend in perfectly with darkness
For a few days, it had seemed Leonard was getting better, but now it was as if he had suddenly taken a turn for the worse. The spines along his back drooped off to the side, scales dirty and unkempt. Yellow eyes were dull, even when on the attack and they swirled to normally a bright red, it was nothing more than a flickering crimson ember.
He finally managed to catch a rabbit, it would be enough to sustain little Seere. The black beast started to trudge back to the mound, feet and claws struggling to lift upwards, tail dragging behind him. It truly would have been a sad sight for anyone to lay eyes on the once proud beast, to what he was now.
It felt like time was at a stop, but Leonard did finally return to the cave. As he entered the darkness, the black beast released a croaked rumble. He waited silently for several moments, then was quickly answered by a chirrup and pattering of small feet and claws on stone. A silvery shape pounced nearby onto his paws, looking up at him with bright blue eyes. The little dragon chick gave a happy chirrup, tail swaying.
Leonard dropped the rabbit, slowly sitting back on his haunches, watching as the little one fed. Not a sound came from him as he watched Seere eat. Normally he'd give a comforting prrum or rumble, but there was only an unearthly silence.
"D-daddy...you can have the rabbit..."
The black dragon glanced downwards towards his chick. He leaned his head down, lightly nuzzling Seere, "No Seere, you need to eat...I can always find more."
The little dragon looked about ready to argue, but then stopped himself. Seere could sense something was wrong, something was eating away at his father. Yet what that was, he couldn't quite understand, not yet anyways. Just that something in his own little heart told him his father was in pain, and he couldn't do anything to help...
Seere had eaten his fill, moving to the soft nest his daddy had built just for him. The little creature curled up, nestling down amongst the leaves, moss, some feathers, and even a few shiny stones along the edges of the nest. The small creature's breathing slowed, sides rising and falling as he had soon fallen asleep.
The quiet sound of Seere's breathing was the only thing in the cave, the soft sound of rain beginning to fall outside. These should have been the only noises, but they weren't unfortunately. Once Seere had fallen asleep, did the black beast slowly get, walking towards the entrance.
Leonard sat down, head hanging low as he looked outside, the rain falling. But the voices, the taunting thoughts that plagued his mind had seemingly grown in number, increasing their vicious onslaught.
'You should have been there...you should have staid...you could have saved them all, but you didn't...you were out looking for what, food? There was still plenty of meat left on that carcass...should have waited to hunt again...but you didn't...you were too worried...and your worry was their downfall...you still hear her screams...the chicks panicked cries...and you weren't there...you heard them pleading...praying...but you are nothing more than a failure...you are no dragon...you should have died...'
"ENOUGH!!!"
His voice boomed, echoing down the tunnel. The black dragon suddenly launched himself out of the cave, seemingly have a sudden burst of energy. The voices! He wanted them to stop! He just wanted it all to end!
Black wings flared outwards, beating the air against the rain. The wind seemed to even pick up in his growing fury, but he wasn't furious at any outside source. No, it was himself, the voice, he was enraged at. As he flew, the darkness around him seemed to grow. His already large wings seemed to grow even more as the shadows clung to them. The darkness, the already dreary day seeming to aid with his shadowy transformation. There was no light to pierce through the dark gray clouds, to bring a stop to the shadow.
A black blur, a giant shadow that cast darkness upon the world below as he flew upwards. He let his wings carry him, releasing a furious roar for all to hear. Below, birds instantly scattered upwards from their roosts, startled by the loud noise. He paid them no mind, his path clearly taking him forward towards the large mountain in the distance.
As he neared it, the rain turned into snow. Higher and higher the black shadow went through the blowing snow. The cold didn't bother him, especially now. Even as he flew, trying to get away from the torment, the voices still followed, hissing in his mind. Stop! He wanted it all to stop!
'You are nothing but a waste of breath...how she ever came to love a miserable shade...she is better off dead...just as you would be...go die...'
Shapes, he saw shapes in the corner of his eyes. His torment coming, coming to trick his mind, force him to see things he did not want to see. Beautiful Eshai, her once silver scales stained red, watching as men appeared all around, laughing manically as they plunged their weapons into her scales, into flesh. Her screams echoed, blood pooling below, creating a lake of blood. Then the two of three chicks, watching as humans tossed them from side to side, taking turns strangling them, each little one gasping, trying to catch a breath as their eyes rolled into the back of their head.
And he stood there, watching as it all happened. Frozen, unable to do anything as his life crumbled before him. Something clicked, the beast suddenly launching himself at some unknown foe, desperately trying to attack whatever was there.
To the outside world, they would see nothing more than a giant black dragon, clawing at the side of the mountain. He would lash out, claws hooking into stone, trying to bite down on great crags to no avail. His eyes glowed red with a feral light, but behind that feral look, was pain.
The black beast suddenly began slamming his head viciously into the rock wall. Every slam was done even more violently than the last. So much so, one of his horns actually seemed to creak, becoming crooked. Blood started to ooze from self-caused wounds as the dragon continued his assault on the stone wall and even himself.
This battle continued onwards for who knew how long. Eventually he flopped down, exhausted and even more broken than before. Leonard, having enough, slowly curled up into himself. No more, he didn't want it anymore. The pain was numb, too tired to even care. As he laid, the once furious snowstorm began to simmer down to a gentle snow fall.
The white began to blanket the hurt beast, and he did nothing to rid himself of it. The snow, it would bury him, hide him from this cruel, cold world. For just a moment, he thought he saw a raven, a raven with glowing blue markings...did the servant of death finally come? Or were the cruel visions continuing to torment him?
A soft voice...a soft, sweet voice...so much like hers...it couldn't be...
Leonard had started to close his dull, lifeless yellow eyes, having changed back to their normal color after his rage. His eyelids were half-way down, seeing movement nearby. He instantly started to dismiss it as just the voices still tormenting him, even as he waited for death.
But that voice...a shape came into view. It was white, much smaller than he had thought. White feathers, gentle blue eyes, a bird, an egret. Now, it would be nothing, it would mean nothing to anyone but Leonard. This vision, that bird, Eshai had always loved the egret. He never understand why, perhaps just the elegance of the creature, or something else entirely, had always made his Eshai have a soft spot for them.
'Leo...my poor Leonard...what have they done to you...please my love...'
The bird seemingly dispersed into the snow, now revealing a much larger shape. It had seemingly grown in size, now revealing a slim dragonelle. His once partially closed eyes opened wider. Eshai! Had she come back, was this all just a horrible nightmare and his love was back?
No, it was all crushed as his eyes adjusted more, settling on the young dragonelle. She was much younger than his Eshai had been, too white, and instead of a sail running from her head to her tail, was instead replaced with evenly placed spines. This was no Eshai, this was a stranger.
Once again the great black dragon's heart dropped back down even further. He didn't even release a rumble, only closing his eyes again. Before, he would have been completely against showing such weakness, but since the burst of tormenting madness, it seemed his ability to care about the possibility of a threat was dulled.
He didn't want to answer, he wanted to just stay quiet. Leonard wanted to be left alone, left to whatever hell that awaited him...
"No...I will never be alright," the black dragon's voice was devoid of all emotion, "But my well-being and life is meaningless to the likes of a stranger."
Leonard's form hardly moved. He simply continued to lay as the snow remained blanketing and growing heavier upon his body. He seemed even more frail, parts of his body easily distinguished as bone pressed against broken skin and scales. There was hardly any mass to the beast, mostly bones and scales were all that was there.
"Don't waste precious breath on a stranger which you have only met, even more so a broken one...go back to your cave white one, there is nothing for you here..."
The black dragon still did not move. He made no attempt to even sit up or shake the snow off of his body. Leonard's mind was still in darkness, the voices still lingering in the background. It would only be a matter of time before they took hold again, which the guilt would soon become madness.
Perhaps that was his punishment, creatures of the God of Madness being sent to plague his dreams and mind. Leonard did not know, nor did he care. For just that brief moment he thought he had Eshai again, but it turned out to be nothing more than a curious dragonelle who happened to stumble upon him.
The silver slowly stood, moving closer, soon entwining her neck carefully around the black beast. The pair of dragons remained in their embrace for several moments, then pulled apart. A soft smile was on the silver's muzzle as she looked at him, "Thank you my love. They were beginning to pester me for something to eat."
"Of course Eshai, I knew it was getting close to their feeding time, and I'm sure you are hungry as well."
A warm smile also appeared the black dragon's muzzle, a loud prrum coming from deep in his chest. His yellow eyes looked into the blue of his mate's, then towards the chicks nearby. The dragonelle also turned her head, watching them. For a moment, those blue eyes showed a glint of worry, then disappeared.
However, Leonard had caught sight of it. He lightly nuzzled Eshai's neck, speaking softly, "Something troubling you love?"
Her blue eyes never left the three chicks, particular the smallest of the trio. Eshai released a soft sigh, exhaling a puff of white mist. She slowly closed her eyes, her voice also soft for only her mate's ears.
"It's...it really shouldn't be anything...but I am worried about little Seere. His scales have hardly developed, nothing like his sisters. I'm afraid he'll get hurt much easier, as well as suffer from disease...I don't want anything happening to him...all of them..."
Leonard frowned, "Eshai...maybe he just needs more time. Just think, in several years, he'll have silver scales, proud and prominent...just like his mother."
He moved his head, nuzzling his mate. The black dragon prrumed, hoping to comfort her, "I promise, nothing will happen to him, all of them. I won't let anything harm any of you, I swear upon the High One's Name."
Eshai lifted her head, returning her mate's affection. Her voice was soft, gentle, "Thank you...Leonard..."
The wolfen creature never finished as a sudden black shadow appeared before it, sending it somersaulting backwards for quite a ways. The 'shadow' was in fact not a shadow at all, but the humanoid that was Leonard.
"You Servants to the God of Chaos are all the same...you never know when to shut the hell up..."
Shadowy wings once again flared outwards. His feet pounded the earth, skidding one way, then the other. The Abomination, it must be getting ready to slip on that ice...but Leonard, in his eagerness to finish the fight, did not anticipate the giant beast to recover from the blindness so quickly...
A sweep of his wings, a leap upwards. Red eyes glowed brightly in the darkness of the humanoid's shadowy shroud. He swept his arm downwards, aiming to once again pierce the back of this beast's skull, instead of a forward approach.
A heavy clawed hand suddenly wrapped around him. Leonard instantly felt panic swell within him. The attack he once had thought would soon be executed, was quickly turned against him. The male tried to thrash free, but to no avail. The beast's fist started to crush downwards, raising Leonard to eye-level.
The pain! He wanted to roar, to scream as he felt several ribs start to give way, unable to stand up to the pressure in this form. The most the male could do was release a choking snarl. No, he couldn't die here, not now...not like this...
For a moment, his eyes flashed bright red. What little air he could get, Leonard inhaled, then quickly released as that shadowy black fire. Though it was not nearly as strong as before. The most he managed to get out was a few trickles of black flames, not nearly enough to make the abomination reel back as he made it do before.
Instead, the creature seemed to give a strange, gurgle, as if chuckling at the suffering of the thing it was crushing.
Leonard continued to try and struggle free, precious air continuing to escape his lungs. His red eyes were flickering back to a dull yellow, then red, then back to yellow. For a moment, he thought he saw something rather small out of the corner of his eye.
Was that a flash of silver? No...it couldn't be...
His flickering eyes landed upon his son, standing several feet away. What was he doing?! Though now his child had the attention of the Abomination. No longer was its attention towards the two dragons trying to fight nearby, all eyes were upon the small, human-like child.
Leonard opened his mouth, wanting to call out, but instead he suddenly felt himself being violently tossed to the side. It was such a quick, sudden movement, he had no time to even try to catch himself as he was flung through the air.
The male went on a straight collision course, body colliding with the trunk of a tree. He heard a sickening 'crack' as his body hit. Broken bones, most likely a rib or two also broke. Leonard fell forward to the ground unmoving.
He thought he heard a cry...Seere...
Oh gods, the pain! Leonard felt his innards lurch, nearly losing what little he had in his stomach, the pain so nauseating. His vision grew darker, the world coming in and out of focus around him. The sounds seemed to even become muffled as he tried to keep himself conscious.
The male forced himself to roll over onto his stomach, once again swallowing the bile down his throat. One of his wings was crumpled underneath him, tail limp behind. Leonard's already damaged horn seemed to be tilting even more so to the side than before, blood flowing downwards. His vision cleared for a moment, seeing his little Seere, desperately trying to get away as the abomination began to approach.
Move...goddamn't! Why couldn't he move?!
His body...too broken...too tired...Leonard could only watch helplessly...
The male, started to raise a shaky hand outwards towards the direction little Seere laid...
"S-S-Seere...I...p-p-please...not...not l-like this...not...again..."
His arm fell to the ground, body going completely limp...
It seemed...awfully silent...cold even...was this what happened when the Death God's Servant guided your soul? Did it truly end for him...was this it?
Shuffling...was Quietus drawing closer now...or was it another?
PAIN! He felt it shoot through his body as something ever so lightly touched him. The male's eyelids were open in an instant, the eyes flashing bright red for just a moment as his body jerked, making it all that much worse on him.
Leonard was still alive...if barely. Several hissing curses rolled under his breath, gritting his teeth as he rolled onto his back. The red gaze was no more, only a dull yellow with little to no light. Each breath he tried to take seemed to rattle.
His mind felt hazy, as if a dense fog suddenly rolled over, mixing his thoughts. What had happened just now? A fight? Everything seemed to have happened so quick...who the hell were these dragons again? Wait...
"S-S-Seere," the male's voice was a raspy hiss, blood leaking from the corners of his mouth. Yet none of that matter, the pain, his life, nothing...what was the fate of his chick?
"W-w-what...of Seere," it had been so long since he actually felt...was this a burning sensation growing in his eyes...what was this...damn't...
He gave a painful swallow, "P-please...please t-t-tell me...he's alright..."
Even if this dragonelle was more concerned about him, Leonard could care less. He wanted to know, he needed to know his little Seere was still alive...and that the worse didn't happen...
"Seere...little S-Seere...t-t-there...you are..."
The male lifted a weak arm, letting it go around to wrap around the child. His still good wing slowly, weakly, unfurled from his back, moving to gently wrap Seere in a 'blanket'. Though injured, Leonard felt a wave of peace wash over him as his little one returned to him. He knew Seere was safe...that was all that mattered in his eyes.
The child curled up into his father. His head rested against Leonard's chest, hearing the comforting sound of his heartbeats, but something was off about them. They were uneven, skipping beats every now and then, not the gentle, steady beat he was used to.
Seere lifted his head, looking up towards his father's head. The child's voice was soft, a choked chirrup coming before words, "D-daddy...daddy you're hurt..."
He lifted a hand, wiping away more tears that were falling down his face. Though his eyes shined, the child's voice tried to sound hopeful as he thought of something, "I...I-I'll get Rosaria...she'll know what t-t-to do! Y-Yasha can help too! Just w-wait daddy...we ca-..."
A hand suddenly reached upwards, lightly caressing the child's face, making him grow quiet. Leonard's dull yellow eyes looked towards Seere's teal blue. The male exhaled a rattling breath.
His voice was soft, "Seere...you know...w-w-we're alone here...no one...is coming..."
Leonard spoke the harsh truth, one which Seere, in the back of his mind, knew was true. They weren't in their world anymore, what Seere knew was gone, the ones his daddy trusted, the ones who had helped them while still back home...they weren't here, and it was likely they would never be here.
Seere choked again, letting himself fall back upon his father. He curled up tightly, letting that great wing cover him as it had done so many times before, letting his head rest on his daddy's chest. Only to hear the uneven beat of a heart desperately trying to cling onto what little life there was left.
Once again, Seere felt helpless...a lost child...a burden...
Seere hadn't moved, curled up against his daddy's side, keeping that black wing wrapped around himself. He felt the warm tears sliding down his cheeks, coming to rest on Leonard's chest. His tail curled up between his legs, small wings messily folded against his back.
Even in such a weakened state, Leonard remained with an arm around his child, unwilling to let go...deep down, the male would never admit...afraid to let go...he didn't want to lose Seere...
The black dragon had already lost so much...he couldn't lose anymore...he couldn't lose the one who was keeping him anchored to this world. Even back home, Seere had always been Leonard's only way of staying sane, for the most part.
Though, if he were to die now...Seere would need to be pried from his cold, dead grasp...but it seemed other things were planned...
