Natsumi was born the only child to a pair of scientists working in the Global Purification Union to track and combat the rapidly growing spread of Ash Blight Syndrome. Due to the nature of her parents' work, they were forced to trade opposite shifts in order to be able to care for Natsumi. As a result she rarely saw both of her parents together, except for weekends – times that Natsumi cherished dearly.
Though her parents tried to shield her from the harsh reality of the world and give Natsumi as much of a normal childhood as possible, the constant news of Homunculus and Aberrant attacks and worsening outbreaks of Ash Blight Syndrome did not escape her notice. She thus grew determined to help in any way she could, resolving to join her parents' cause once she grew older. On her fifteenth birthday, Natsumi's wish was granted when she was made an intern of the Global Purification Union in the same laboratory her parents worked at.
However, a year later Natsumi's dream came to an end when one of the other scientists, who had unknowingly been afflicted with Ash Blight Syndrome, turned Homunculus and summoned Aberrants to massacre everyone in the facility. Natsumi's mother died in front of her as the former rushed to save her daughter from the Homunculus's attack. Her father, meanwhile, sacrificed himself while saving as many of his fellow researchers as he could. In the end Natsumi, cornered by the Homunculus and hostile Aberrants, was saved by a platoon of Dawnwing Organization Liberators that had been deployed to the area. She thus joined them with the resolve of carrying on her parents' legacy, hoping that one day she would be able to find a cure for Ash Blight Syndrome and wipe out the Aberrants for good.
During her time with the Dawnwing Organization, Natsumi spent her downtime between training sessions and missions feverishly conducting research both in Skyhaven's library and the surrounding facilities for any signs of a possible cure. Gradually her thirst for knowledge grew beyond finding a cure for Ash Blight Syndrome to preserving any scrap of knowledge across all disciplines that were at threat of being lost to time. Natsumi became known for leading her fellows on expeditions to record and preserve any knowledge they could find.
At first, the Dawnwing Organization tolerated these detours as long as they did not interfere with their work. However, as Aberrant attacks continued to increase in frequency and ferocity over the years the organization eventually shut down the expeditions and forbade anyone from carrying them out, seeing them as a waste of time in the face of the threat. Frustrated at these rules, Natsumi continued to lead these expeditions in secret despite the new rules, earning herself the derogatory nickname "Nerd-Faced Freak" in the process.
As Natsumi's amassed knowledge grew, so too did fears that she would turn that knowledge against the Dawnwing Organization. The organization's fears nearly came to light when Natsumi inadvertently came inches away from stumbling upon top-secret information regarding the Dawnwing Organization's true motives. Realizing they had to act, Dawnwing Organization leadership locked everything down and captured Natsumi. Initially planning to dispose of her, Dawnwing Organization leadership realized her combat prowess, along with her close ties to the Global Purification Union through her late parents, made her a valuable asset. Thus they instead chose to wipe her memory before demoting her to outcast so the Dawnwing Organization could continue to utilize her ties to the Global Purification Union while keeping a close eye on her.
Her ordeal did little, however, to stem Natsumi's thirst for knowledge – rather, she simply redirected her efforts to more mundane – and hopefully more helpful – disciplines.
