how they affect each other:
ikaika’s recklessness (and his tendency to get high when he definitely should not) forces amari to take over on some of their misadventures, seeing how capable she is helps her confidence, also just throughout the story her successes make her more confident, he helps her stop caring so much about what people think and not blindly do what she’s told, she gets so sick of him that she finally stands up for herself, other characters help her with not taking her selflessness too far
amari snaps and she calls him out on how reckless and “apathetic” he is, he tries to be better briefly, falls back, she snaps again, forces him to see how his behavior is hurting the people he cares about, and he finally starts to change, stop doing drugs, consider how his actions affect other people, and open up a little (in the sense of letting himself care about things again)

equivalent of a bachelor's degree

she grew up on a war torn planet. it wasn't particularly bad where she lived (i'm thinking more cold war, bomb safety drills every week kinda thing where she was), but she saw a lot of dark things and what war/a lack of peace can lead to, and she volunteered to help people whenever she could. her family was able to get off the planet and move to a new one. years later, she learned that her home planet had joined the planetary federation, which helped them finally achieve peace.

she went to school and lived a pretty normal life on the new planet, but growing up on the other planet influenced a lot of her personality. she volunteered a lot, and she wanted to get a job that would help people, so she decided to work for the government. around this time, her planet was taken into the planetary federation, but she wasn't one of those crazy conspiracy theorist rebels, so she was even more motivated to start working for them.

she got a degree in criminal justice, became a police officer with the goal of becoming a crisis negotiator, and got the job. she was very persistent, driven, and determined, and she got really good at it. eventually, she was approached by people who worked for the planetary federation, and after additional training, she became a crisis negotiator for them.

when ikaika kaomi, a notorious terrorist who had been threatening the galaxy, especially the planetary federation, for years, was found, she was on the team tasked with bringing him in.

this is where our story begins.

she's very close with her family and they have a strong, healthy relationship. she lives alone, but she sees her family often.

her lack of confidence stems from multiple small things: high expectations for herself, shitty peers (when she was training/starting out as a negotiator, there were a few people who took their competitiveness too far and tried to break her down because they knew she was better at the job than them and that threatened them), not every one of her negotiations have gone well, and though everyone experiences failure in their jobs, hers is higher stakes and have many more negative consequences, so her failures have stuck with her and continue to nerf her confidence and make her second guess herself, she wants to please those in charge and she fears failing to do so
