Witch
She is a potential companion.
She explains the vulnerability of the ghosts to symbols. She is a strong fighter. She is a trained nurse able to give the protagonist medical treatment. She is also supposed to amuse, exasperate, and unsettle the player.
She is tall, lean, and beautiful. She has an ugly scar across her throat. Her hair is long, straight, black, and glossy. She has straight bangs. Big, crazy green eyes. Angular facial features with a strong jaw and a big, angular smile. She’s always smiling. She has blackened teeth, as if by betel nut.
Her voice is a raspy whisper.
Tight leather pants. Over that she wears a cargo harness made of straps and buckles. Silver cropped jacket covered in chrome spikes. Knee high combat boots with lots of buckles.
She carries a blackened human heart with her, wrapped in silver chains or barbed wire.
She is unable to sleep and has been awake since she got sick in the immediate aftermath of the war.
Used to be a professional singer famous for her beauty and her pure, golden voice. Her throat actually got slit before the war. Her voice never recovered from the injury, and it left her profoundly changed. She became a registered nurse but soon entered a convent to become a nun. It was then that the bombs fell.
When discovered, she has a muzzle over her face that prevents her from speaking. The muzzle has a strong lock and she doesn’t have the key. If the player helps her remove the muzzle she will never stop talking.
She carries a ninja sword on her back and a small submachine gun.
When you die, I want to watch the life leave your eyes, ok?
Did you know that I count your breaths when you sleep? I never miscount.
You said your true name in your sleep last night. Now I know it. You can trust me though. I would never use it to control you.
Sometimes when you’re not looking I put some of the ghosts into little bottles, just to keep. At night I take them out and look at them. They keep me company.
You remind me of your mother.
Can I tell you a secret? [doesn’t say anything else, regardless of the player’s answer.]
Hey [player’s name], can you keep a secret? [raspy laughter] [doesn’t say anything else, regardless of the player’s answer.]
Sometimes to keep myself entertained I tell myself little stories. The stories are about you.
Look out! Sorry, I thought you had a spider on your shoulder. Yikes.
I can hear your heart beating. I bet you wonder why you can’t hear mine? Can you hear my heart beating?
[very often] [whispered, barely audible] I love you. I love you. I love you. I love you.
[very often] [whispered, barely audible] [character’s name - not to get attention but as if saying the name gives her pleasure]
Don’t listen to anybody who tells you the ghosts aren’t real. I promise you, they are. You are doing the right thing.
I’m really good at hiding. Don’t worry. If you send me away, I won’t leave you. I’ll just hide and you won’t have to see me.
[Player requests medical assistance]
Don’t worry, I can patch you up.
[looking at disturbing locations] That smell… it takes me back to the war, at the convent. Every room was full. We had had stretchers in every hallway. The floor was slick with blood. You had to be really careful or you would slip and fall.
[What happened to your voice?]
I used to sing, you know? I was famous. ‘The girl with the golden voice.’ I attracted a stalker though. I hate stalkers! The cops said they couldn’t do anything. One night he attacked. The doctors couldn’t fix the damage. After that I went to the convent and trained as a nurse. I be you didn’t know I was a nun.
[So what’s the deal with the muzzle?]
I don’t want to talk about that. OK?
This is so scary…
[I think it’s time for us to part ways.]
Noooo! Please don’t leave me. Please!
[part ways]
It’s OK. I understand. I don’t blame you. If you ever need me though, just say my name. I’ll be right there.
[trade]
I just want you to know, I am willing to carry anything for you. … ANYTHING.
[trade]
Bear your burdens? Is there anything else you want me to bear for you? Because I will do it. Just say the word.
[leaving combat]
Wow, that was really scary.
[during combat]
(Extended bouts of insane, gleeful cackling)
[triggered by passing through an area strewn with bones. Witch will then move behind the player.]
Wow, there are really a lot of bones around here. Especially right there, behind you.
[The player turns around to discover numerous human bones have been quickly arranged to spell out “I <3 U” in large letters.]
She is the first character the player encounters. She explains the ghosts’ vulnerability to symbols.
