Veil's mother, Flow of the River, realized she was pregnant with the child of a demon prince fairly early on and returned to him and his realm in order to give birth. The resulting child retained only the cat ears and long cat tail as her tabaxi heritage, her skin lacking fur otherwise and being of a relatively human shade which is unusual but not entirely unheard of as the demon prince has the ability to alter his physical form and can appear human if he wishes so the skin tone was passed off as some kind of trait related to that.

River was supposed to serve the demon prince, but instead told him she wanted to raise their daughter first. So Veil grew up in the demon's realm, surrounded by other fiendish entities and never knowing any other life. In time she showed a talent for magic, but unlike her mother who had been given just a slice of the demon prince's power to fuel her spellwork in exchange for a pact to serve him Veil had inherent magical power that marked her as a sorcerer. As she grew that power manifested further, showing in an odd ability that let her store latent magical energies in magical sigils that etched themselves into her skin. River did her best to guide Veil towards good and help her reign in her powers, but it was at best a tie between all of that and Veil's natural tendency to want to take after her father, torturing innocent creatures and using her magic to cause destruction and chaos.

When Veil turned 16 the demon prince figured she was old enough that River could go back out into the world and continue to serve him and not hover over Veil. A year later Veil left too, wanting to see the world that she knew existed outside the realm she had been born into and get away from her parents influences to start finding herself. She's looked upon strangely and knows that many people don't understand her, but that doesn't stop her from keeping her head high and continuing to push forward until she finds something that's worth pursuing in the world.
