Clockwork was born to a town full of her kind and lived relatively unremarkable until she was taken captive by some other humanoids along with several others who were with her doing some general scavenging and foraging outside the town's borders. Those humanoids came in to grab small and easy to work with specimens for various levels of experimentation.

Like all those taken with her, Clockwork was subject to the torture they called experiments. Eventually they left her for dead when things went too far, but somehow she was able to survive and found a place to hole up and recover some before moving on. She fears that the people who tormented her will find her and want to finish the job if they know she's alive, so she travels and tries not to stay in one place for too long if she can help it.
