He has no true motivation other than becoming the greatest gladiator that ever walked Lydonia. He escapes the pain of his family's death by causing death.
Torrah was born in a large mining village in Western Chitan. His father had been a soldier in Empress Xerena Lancare's army and his mother was a teacher at the village school. He has two siblings; an older brother named Roqo and a younger sister Siba. He looked up to Roqo and the two a close relationship. He had a pretty easy life in the beginning until civil war broke out in Chitan between the Imperial House of Lancare in the West and The Eastern Chitani Republic in the East. From there his father went off to war seeking glory for the Empire.
His mother continued to teach the students throughout the war and Roqo was left to look after a young Torrah and Siba. They spent most of their time sparring in the yard while their mother was working and had each become good fighters for their ages. The three siblings started a fight club with some of the older kids in the village and it was a success until their mother found out and put a stop to it. That didn't stop the trio from setting up street fights elsewhere.
Their lives changed forever when the Republic's army defeated the Legion their father had joined and brought the war to their village. The village was sacked and looted. Hundreds died in the fighting and hundreds more in the fires the Republic set. Torrah and his family were able to flee before they'd gotten there and made way for Lord's Port, hoping to board a ship to Xylon. When they arrived they found that the city had been overrun by Republic soldiers as well as Raahkan ships in the harbor. They were caught upon entry into the city and were imprisoned. Shortly after that Torrah's mother was sold into slavery and put on a ship to Tulan. Siba was next to be sold but when they tried to take her the three fought furiously. Torrah and Roqo were hit in the back of the head and knocked out. When they woke up they were chained together on a ship; Siba was nowhere to be found.
When the ship docked they were across the Nasus Sea in Khala, one of the great cities of Raah. They'd be sold to a Khoro, a Raahkan trainer of gladiators. The two were stripped of their belonging and when they tried to fight they were severely beaten. Roqo would continue to plan their escape while they were forced to train for the fighting pits of Khala. A year into their training the brother's were put into their first pit fight. It was nothing like the fights they put on in the yard in Chitan but a fight for their very lives. The two brother's won for their master's house and were soon booked for another fight in three months.
Roqo wanted to make sure they'd escaped before that time. One night in an effort to escape Roqo attacked a guard during lock up. The two brother's made a run for it but were caught by the Khoro's guards. They managed to kill fifteen guards before they were overrun. The next morning the two were strung up on post and left to starve and dehydrate for three days. On the third day the Khoro commanded that only one of them would be allowed to live. He put a sword in each of their hands and demanded they fight to the death. Torrah refused but Roqo was not going to let his brother throw his life away. He volunteered to be executed but the Khoro refused; either they would fight to the death or they both would die. Roqo attacked his brother and forced him to defend himself. Torrah knew what he was doing but would not kill his brother. Roqo forced a swing of Torrah sword and dropped his guard. The blade caught Roqo in the side of his neck. His dying words were "never stop fighting, Torrah."
Torrah was then given fifteen lashes, one for each of the guards he and Roqo killed, and then strung to the post for an extra day looking at the corpse of Roqo dry up in the sun. Truly alone in the world Torrah has struggled with what happened for years and is haunted by the memories of his family's misfortune. He doesn't form meaningful relationships with anyone as he has grown accustomed to the people around him dying and sees no point in forming relationships. He drowns out his pain and loss by killing in the arena and he is good at it.
Currently Torrah is his master's top gladiator and seeks glory in the Sulan games. He secretly seethes with anger and awaits the perfect time to strike out against his master.
Torrah had a normal education befitting a soldier's son. After the war he was sold into slavery during the migration to Xylon.
