Siri was born in the dwarven city of Halberton, and her family was well known for being some of the best warriors around. Their secret, of course, was that they sent their children to train with the monastic orders in Tavnoin . When they came of age the children were disguised and sent off with members of the order who came into the city under the guise of being merchants, and came back after their training in much the same way. To make up for their absence during those years the family simply said they had been sent away to school, and no one questioned that.
So it was that as all before her, Siri was sent to Tavnoin to train with the monks in secret, The Sisters choosing her to train among them. In her 20's Siri had finished her training and returned home, but she immediately hated it; her family expected that she would use her training to serve them without question, and that removal of her freedom was what irked her more than anything.
Siri left less than a year after her return, sneaking out with a caravan, changing her last name and shaving off her beard to avoid discovery, and enjoying freedom in the world. The thought of joining a mercenary company was tempting, but once she had the details Siri knew it wouldn't be any different, it would just be someone else telling her where to go and what to do all the time just like her family. That in mind, Siri decided to freelance. Rough work considering the various companies took most of it since people knew they could trust the groups and the money was worth it, which meant a lot of the jobs Siri did were the type that required ignoring a moral compass. But it was a living, and Siri had to admit some part of her liked it.
One job in particular was to go into some ruins and find an ancient artifact, an enchanted book. She was warned not to touch the book and especially not to read it once she found it, just wrap it in cloth and haul ass back to the guy who paid her for the job. Siri was skeptical, but the money was good so she took it and headed off. The ruin was completely unguarded and the book easy to find, which made her think that the guy who hired her was an idiot but at least it was easy as she wrapped the book in a cloth and took it with her.
Then, things went wrong. The book began to speak to her, whisper in the night and haunt her dreams. It begged her to read it, to open its pages and unlock all its secrets. On the third night Siri couldn't take it, and she did what the book asked. The horrors of that tome imprinted themselves upon her mind and drove her mad; Siri tossed the book in the fire and fled. After that it was a downward spiral as Siri tried everything to forget what was in her head from sleeping around to heavy drinking, getting into constant fist fights and generally being just about every negative dwarven stereotype that existed. This lasted a few years until, finally, Siri ended up pregnant. As soon as she knew there was a child inside of her she cleaned herself up, hard as that was. Staying sober and away from the carnal distractions was extremely difficult, but Siri's monastic training helped her out as she meditated and began to memorize poetry to keep her mind clear.
But she knew she couldn't keep the child. Her lifestyle wasn't suitable for it, they'd be an outcast like her and she would always need someone to watch them while she hunted or searched ruins. If something happened to her she'd have to hope whoever the child was with would be kind enough to look after them. Those were all chances she was not willing to take with the life of an innocent child who did not deserve to be blamed or hurt for her actions. So Siri went to the dwarves of Mount Temislet and made a deal with them; she could spend her last months pregnant with them in safety and they would help with the delivery and allow her to stay heal after if needed. In return she would give her child to one of the dwarven clans there, and it would be up to the leader of that clan to decide if she would be allowed contact with the child.
So Siri had her son in a mountain, and was subsequently told that any letters or anything else would be kept by the clan head until the boy was an adult. Then he would be given them and allowed to decide what he wanted to do with that information, but Siri would not be allowed back in the mountain or anywhere near him until that point. She stayed for a week to recover but never saw her son, and left without a word as soon as she was able to.
From there Siri kept herself clean, despite the difficulty, and picked up as a sellsword again. That lasted until she was forced to return to Halberton on other business. Though she never made amends with her family she decided that joining the town guard was better than continuing to live life as she had and figured enough time had passed that she wouldn't be recognized if she kept her head down. Becoming guard captain, and then eventually being promoted to the head of Halberton's military force has made that all but impossible, but if her family has noticed that it's her they haven't said anything and so far Siri has taken to enjoying her time spent helping keep the city and its residents safe.
