She is more critical of the family image than her husband and children, considering that her neighborhood has known her forever and NOT the others. She goes out of her way to make the house as ‘Southern Chic’ as she can considering it’s dilapidated state in order to appear more ‘homey’. She tends to treat Ellie, who is blind, more like one of her students (she’s a teacher at a school for the deaf and blind) than her daughter, and the covert micromanagement makes Ellie feel uncomfortable with being independent.
