Safiya Vera Vaughn
Female
18
Protagonist (one of five)
Saf, Witch
Puerto Rican - Human
A light tan, obviously a Latin-American, but on the lighter spectrum.
Casually fit, with tromping through the woods all day and cheerleading, she's got some muscles on her.
Something has always looked off about Safiya. Whether it was her canines being just a little too long, her ears a bit too pointed. Sometimes it looked as if her skin wasn't her own, she looked normal, but it just felt wrong. Her eyes seemed to stare at things that nobody else saw, and widen at the smallest details from miles away. Upon first glance, she seems perfectly normal, but the more you stare, the more abnormal she becomes. Maybe it's in the ghost-like way she moves or speaks, but you can never look for too long, you'll begin to notice it all.
130-140lbs
5'8
Dark Brown
Real big curly hair, has dozens upon dozens of different hairstyles for such a texture.
It actually reaches just below her chest if pulled straight, but since it's so curly, it appears to be just a bit past her shoulders. It's normally parted in the middle, with no layers cut in.
Dark Brown, almost an auburn color.
Safiya is an excellent artist, but only in nature or landscape sketches. She's very flexible, and a great problem solver.
Her mother was diagnosed with schizophrenia, but it's unclear if any debilitating mental illnesses were passed to her.
Safiya is very blunt, sarcastic, stone-faced, and calculating. She isn't afraid nor ashamed to say exactly what she is thinking, but appears unfazed or plain uninterested at everything that's happening to her.
Definitely a Sherlock Holmes type character, but a bit more human than he is. Safiya is a very good actress, and uses it to sort of help fit in with the cheerleaders and others.
She was always pretty strange as a child, which sparked her interest in the cult, but she became much more guarded and isolated herself after Jonah and the cult. Beforehand, she was a lot more extroverted and brave around people, now she just drifts on the outside edge.
Safiya enjoys botany and cheerleading the most. She likes to feel in touch with the earth, and often spends her time in the woods. Cheerleading keeps her body as active as her mind is- not a body image issue- she's afraid to be ever caught off guard. Safiya, truthfully, misses having intimate relationships and friendships with people, and figured that cheerleading was a pretty tight-knit activity, and thought it would help bring that whole social aspect back into her life. (She really does miss having friends, and thought she could make friend's with the cheerleaders).
Safiya will never, ever let her guard down. It affects relationships. She very often overworks herself, or will skip out of a day entirely to smoke whatever concoction she's made in an old broken down bus. She isn't easy to work with, and can't rely on others well, often making rash decisions without input from others. She uses her botany skills to create these dried herbs to later smoke (uses them to create mixes for energy, positivity, etc.)
After her involvement with (name of cult), she's motivated partly by the fact that she doesn't want others to suffer at their hand, partly by pure fear.
Safiya will often zone out and tune out everything around her. She stands relaxed at all times, and never really looks like she's paying attention.
Definitely the type of person who makes 'guess I'll just die' jokes all the time. She has a surprising sense of humor for someone so quiet and out-of-the-loop.
December 3rd
Safiya was born on the outskirts of Acacia- they didn't get to the hospital on time. Her father left her and her mother when Safiya was six years old, but they both moved on rather quickly. Her mother was always a little off, talking to things that weren't there, having violent mood swings, looking at people as if they were inhuman. She was diagnosed with schizophrenia when Safiya was twelve, and sent to a psychiatric hospital a few miles outside of town. Safiya then went to live with her Aunt Via and her Grandmother Delilah. When she was fourteen, she discovered the (name of cult) with her friend Jonah Wilde. Thanks to both of them being very curious, outcast kids, they were easily enchanted by their promises. Safiya learned faster than most, learning spells, alchemy, researching the animals and plants and abnormalities of Acacia. She learned the entire forest, explored the underground areas of Acacia, learned everything there was to know. By sixteen, three other members of said cult had convinced her to participate in a ritual used to summon some higher power, promising her that she would be gifted much more knowledge and opportunity to progress. She was tricked into participating in a suicide ritual, and was the only one to get out alive. It took her a year to trust the group again, and in that time, her and Jonah became close, working on their own rituals for good fortune and energy, giving sacrifice of food and wealth to the forest- they learned of all the good and purity that could be gained. By seventeen, she agreed to help them develop the ritual to summon the same higher power again, with the promise that she would oversee it to ensure it would involve no death. She agreed, and successfully organized it. It was then that Jonah made a horrific discovery about what they were trying to summon, and confronted Safiya. She believed him, but was unwilling to abandon them and all her work. She told him she would help him escape Acacia and the cult, and they said their goodbyes. The following day, she was called to complete the ritual, only to see Jonah kidnapped and being used as sacrifice. The ritual was too far along to stop, and Redfield, the creature of the story, came through a rift in reality. The only way to stop him was open the rift and send him back, which she did, but not before Redfield grabbed Jonah and pulled him through as well, trapping them both. Safiya left the cult for good after that, but continued to study and learn and progress on her own terms. The story begins a year after Jonah disappeared into the rift.
