Malin du Val
Ringmaster and founder of Cirque du Val
Female
29
1,68 meters
Blonde
long up to the waste, wavy, often in a tight ballerina knot to keep it out of her face
greyish-blue
Human
white with freckles all over
Athletic, she has the strength, grace and flexibility of a ballerina/gymnast
she has a ring-shaped rough scar on her right pinky, an incredible amount of tiny freckles
she nearly always wears either her red and gold ringmasters outfit or a dark coloured (black, navy blue, eggplant purple) dress similar to that of the middle-class-London women of 1890 to 1892
One thing she always takes along is her black top hat and walking cane with hidden rapier
To put it bluntly, one would wonder how this woman managed to infiltrate an enemy base filled with zombies, vampires and golems and left without a single scratch when she just got into a fight with a pigeon over a bread crust and knocked herself out by falling down the stairs.
She appears to be clumsy and is unfocused with an unending optimism and determination that could move mountains.
Malin has been in love with the idea of her own circus since she was a kid. Her goal is for Cirque du Val to bring wonder and hope to the audience while simultaneously providing a safe and pleasant home to those who work for her.
She absolutely can not focus on anything and is easily distracted by anything that grabs her attention. This often results in her sudden disappearance for days on end (as she chases a pheasant to figure out where it lives) and agitated city guards (as she wandered into their armoury in search of spirits).
She's also not the smartest person around but has a great deal of luck, experiences and the ability to make allies out of the right people
There is absolutely no danger in running off on your own in an unknown city with possibly hostile individuals.
Musical: singing, violin, piano
Good at acrobatic acts and often freeruns through a city to get away from trouble
Has the weird ability to convince people to do something for her that is completely nuts or in their worst interest. (It's partially bardic magic)
Malin likes to compose musical scores, runoff in order to start on her latest (horrible) idea, perform anywhere with people
Malin is easily distracted by small things such as the movement of a pheasants tail in the grass. She's also kind of gullible as she believes nearly every legend or folktale she hears, such as ghosts of the fallen soldiers in an army base. Combined with her inability to restrain her own impulses she often goes off on her own to investigate.
Malin's main concern is the circus and she will manage to keep focused in order to protect it and everyone who's part of it. In general, she can be seen as a kindhearted individual who'll care for anyone who asks for her help. However, she has driven many of her foes to unfathomable insanities as punishment for threatening any and all that concerns Cirque du Val.
Malin du Val is a fairly skilled bard skilled in the use of magical music for illusions and mind-manipulation. Though she is able to use it for support as well, she has clearly stated I prefer not to, what musician just sits there playing the same chord for fifteen minutes?
She's especially fond of the spells feeblemind, teleport, mirage arcane, Etherealness, Mass suggestion and Modify memorie,
Her natural skills in music are definitely a blessing in her opinion. However, many of her former adventuring-allies agree that the way she uses this skill is very nearly a curse.
Through intense study to develop her talent with music, trial and order and some much-appreciated luck like most other successful bards.
Most of the spells she can perform require her to be able to speak and move if either one of these is impaired it becomes quite troublesome.
- For someone who's supposed to be of neutral alignment and a mortal, she's very high on the (personal) list of threats to Faerûn made by multiple influential organisations and higher beings.
- It is thought by many that if Malin would ever die she'd be spontaneously revived either due to the ruler of the dead not wanting to deal with her or her simply denying that she ever died in the first place.
- Malin can use several bardic spells of her own unique design that would rival a wizard's or sorcerer's world-altering magic
- Although bards are commonly known for their tendencies of seducing nearly everything that breaths, especially enemies, Malin has never once attempted anything of the sort.
- Malin's singing voice is so beautiful that many have mistaken her for being a Harpy in disguise. Ironically this also includes Harpies which is how she survived an encounter with them at the age of 17.
Malin has a strong dislike for spiders and insects because she's extremely ticklish. She's fine with them being present around her as long as they don't touch her.
Void actively hides the fact he isn't a cat.
it is almost common wisdom among the people who know her to keep information about her old adventuring party, with whom she parted under less than ideal circumstances, away from her.
Naxaschirqal: She doesn't actually like him though she does respect him greatly. He's far too serious to her tastes. However, she is well aware that her own tendencies would bring the circus down if there isn't someone around to completely counter her actions. He's a necessary evil to her fun.
Rostal: He's a good friend who's skill with animals is of great importance to the circus. Malin has admiration for his way of doing things and his ability to talk normally with Nax which only she and two others within the circus share.
Void: is actually a familiar who has taken an interest in Malin's unpredictable behaviour. Since Malin is kind of dumb and there is no actual contract between the two she perceives him as a very smart, adorable kitty that just does it's own thing (aka running off to do who knows what).
Marco the Manticore: He's loyal but hard to deal with as a guardian of the circus. though she knows she can trust him to ward off unwanted visitors and protect the weaker, non-humanoid individuals who are part of the circus she has trouble dealing with his diminishing and sadistic attitude towards humans besides herself. She always makes sure one of the stronger artists keeps an eye on him.
Mona & Linda: They don't seem to like her and she's fine with that. they're free to do what they want as long as they help out with the circus as payment for their housing. Besides, Rostal has an okay relationship with them.
Malin inherited her love for the circus, arts and unknown cultures from her grandparents from her mother's side who met each other during their time as acrobats in a travelling show.
She spent most of her childhood with these grandparents as both her mother and father were adventurers who often got hired on far away missions. In those years they taught her the ins and outs of a good show, how to captivate an audience and maintain a good relationship among the artists. They also taught her the most acrobatic abilities they had acquired through their lives for as far as their elderly bones could handle.
Somewhere along the line, Malin grew to adore music as well and began to strive for acceptance to the music school by taking lessons of from the band in their local bar. She achieved this goal at the age of 14. In three years she had fully learned to play the violin, piano as well as composing new pieces and the basics of singing.
After the music school, she went to work in a local tavern as a musician in order to earn money for her main goal, owning her own circus. She worked there for a year before meeting a small adventurers group who promptly invited her to come with them as the adventuring business paid better than singing in a bar.
Malin travelled around with them for six years before deciding she had enough money and coming to the conclusion that her companions were horrible racists and went on her separate ways.
Void, a longhaired black cat with bright golden eyes
Though Malin is unfocused on a lot of things, she's well aware of the ulterior motives that some of her fellow circus artists have and even more so of the often negative view people have of the circus troupe.
It is precisely the second thing she's aware of what motivates her to almost exclusively recruit the more monstrous beings. Her grandparents always told her that a circus was supposed to be a place where everyone could feel like they belonged. Combined with the fact she noticed her fellow adventurers rarely even gave it a try to solve missions concerning goblins or anything of the like by talking (which she often did and did help to a certain extent) she felt those were the once in need of a safe home the most.
in general, people view her as follows.
fellow circus folk: Eccentric, kind, bit scary, doesn't harm a fly.
anyone else: Extremely dangerous bardic magician with an army of monsters and social outcasts.
