Janet Hausman-Scott (née Church) was born in Helten Caster Community to parents Douglas and Joanne Church. She was a fairly impressive child; being intellectually gifted and overall well-mannered. Her parents strongly prioritized Janet’s education and despite coming from a lower-income family, Janet showed promise for a good future in the community, especially after laying her eye on politics.
In her sophomore year of high-school, Janet entered a relationship with a timid but adoring classmate, Peter Hausman. They had an on-and-off relationship for a couple years, struggling due to Peter’s easygoing attitude clashing with Janet’s perfectionism.
Shortly after graduating, Janet accidentally became pregnant and upon revealing this, Peter proposed. Janet hesitantly agreed, not only for the sake of their child but because she did genuinely love Peter and believed they could be happy despite the early start. They married in a simple ceremony and moved into a small home at the edge of the community. Janet continued her education while Peter supported both of them by working for a family-owned electrical company.
A few months into the pregnancy, Janet tragically miscarried. After examination, she was told that she had very slim chances of ever carrying to term. Janet, who’d never expected to want children in the first place, was nonetheless devastated. She and Peter stayed together but struggled with simply talking to one another.
Not long afterward, Janet was introduced to Ines Salgado, through a childhood friend, Isaac Salgado. The two quickly bonded and Janet took it upon herself to help Ines adjust to a new country and culture. They found a shared interest in literature and soon they were keeping in touch by borrowing books back and forth. Janet and Ines had become best friends by the time Ines was married to Isaac and expecting their first child, which was no longer than a few months.
Gradually, Peter and Janet began to grow close again, and shortly after, despite precaution, Janet became pregnant a second time. Ines was the first person she told, as she was too afraid to tell Peter. Ines responded with the news that she was having twins, to which Janet jokingly replied: ‘You had to one-up me, didn’t you?’
The tension between Janet and her husband returned when Janet insisted on attempting to carry to term. But Peter, not one to be demanding, backed down.
Janet lived out her pregnancy under close monitoring from the doctor. She tore through baby books (with Ines’ help) and strictly ate the recommended foods, anything she could do to stay as healthy as possible.
It seemed to pay off. At nine months she delivered a baby boy who was miraculously healthy. Throughout the pregnancy, she had struggled with naming him, fearfully holding onto her favorite name. But after holding her son and being reassured for the tenth time that he had no complications and would be alright, she gave in and named him Kyle Hausman.
From that moment on, Janet stayed a very over-protective mother. She kept him on her hip nearly 24/7 until he could walk and then always kept him within sight. It was years before she’d even let him visit his grandparents, or legal godparents (Ines and Isaac), without her. She even struggled to leave him alone with his father for more than an hour. This wasn’t aided by Peter’s struggle with alcoholism.
Kyle’s vocabulary developed early, and it wasn’t long after that he too was named ‘gifted’. Feeling that he wasn’t being challenged enough at school, Janet took to also tutoring him at home. Kyle flourished intellectually, but his parents butted heads when it came to how much social and physical development he needed. Because of his mother’s overbearing tendencies, Kyle had only really had the chance to bond with Ines’ twin boys, Zachariah and Mikhail. Eventually, she eased up a little and allowed Kyle to participate in a few extracurricular activities. He began to expand his social circle this way. Becoming a friendly and enjoyable little boy despite his late start.
Still, Janet and Peter continued to argue, mainly over how Kyle should be raised, but also over money, and Peter’s own mental health struggles/alcoholism that had him occasionally shutting himself away from everyone. After a few years of this, Janet presented Peter with divorce papers. Peter begged to stay, claiming that he couldn’t live without her or Kyle, but Janet was unmoved, replying that she loved Peter but it was best for everyone if they were separate.
After the divorce, Peter shut himself away on a family-owned property and gradually cut off contact with Janet, who found herself struggling to care for Kyle on her own with just one job. So she dropped out of school and took on a second. All the while shielding Kyle from everything, from her own struggles to his father’s declining mental state. She slowly stopped letting Kyle visit Peter, saying that he had to come to them if he wanted to see his son.
Janet was working when she received a phone call from Ines, who was supposed to watch Kyle after school, saying that her children had arrived home without him and she’d gotten them to reveal that he’d snuck off to see his father, who hadn’t been heard from in weeks. Janet had just finished her fourth frantic voice-message to Peter when a call came in telling her to get to the hospital as quickly as possible.
It wasn’t until she got there that she was informed that Peter had witched sometime while unreachable and although he’d been captured and contained, he’d left Kyle in critical condition. He was quickly stabilized and although he was promised to survive, he’d be left with a permanent injury.
As Kyle recovered, Janet remained glued to his side, eventually losing her job due to her inability to work her schedule around her son’s needs. Eventually, with nowhere else to go, the two were taken in by the Salgado family to avoid homelessness.
This necessary move, and Kyle’s gradual recovery, eventually gave Janet the push to get another job. She managed to land a secretary job at the town hall and although it was far from what she’d wanted to do, she happily took it, and with it—she managed to get her and her son somewhat back on their feet.
Shortly after starting her new job, she caught the attention of Head of Caster Integrity,Jacob Scott. Although she didn’t much enjoy his company, she let him woo her, so as not to jeopardize the job she was lucky to have.
Eventually, when Janet started to resist his advances, he regained her attention by paying for luxuries for her son, instead. Janet, in turn, took full advantage of this, entertaining Jacob in order to win an easier life for her already struggling child.
This went on and shortly thereafter, Janet had Jacob’s full attention, and wedding ring.
Although Jacob is now cruel and abusive to Janet, and her son has grown to be ungrateful for it all, Janet remains married to Jacob in order to make sure her son has all he needs. She has also become a caring step-mother to Jacob’s daughter, Megan Scott and also remains the best friend of Ines Salgado.
