A subtle undercut. Emil's hair is clipped short on the sides, but left longer on the top. Though he does his best to appear neat and tidy, with a clean part, his hair has a mind of its own. It often breaks into loose waves by the afternoon despite being combed back that very morning. When he gets caught in the rain it explodes into thick wild curls upon drying.

Mannerisms - What mannerisms does Emil Eckart Klein have?

When Emil is nervous he tends to play with it hair, running a hand through it, ruffling it, pushing it back again. Emil's hair seems to become proportionately messier the more stressful his day has been.

Emil carries himself rather lackadaisically, relaxed and loose whenever he can be. Not unlike a clumsy puppy he leans against walls, slouches in chairs, and stretches out his legs. No matter how many times his mother tells him to straighten up he just can't help it. The only way to describe it is to say he is at ease in his own skin, open and comfortable with others.

Though endearing to some and irritating to others, Emil's poor posture makes him easier to read than an open book. In uncomfortable situations and lies he goes rigid, holding his shoulders strong and straight with his arms right at his sides or wrapped around his waist. Ever since he was little Emil's mother has been able to tell when he's done something wrong without even needing to know what he's done, the guilt he feels simply gives him away.

When Emil laughs he does so with his whole body. First comes the sharp crack of laughter with a sudden sway backwards, his eyes crinkling at the corners with his smile. His shoulders sag as his knees weaken, catching a hand over his heart before sheepishly pushing it over his face and through his hair. Each time he catches himself with reddened cheeks and sheepish smile, embarrassed to be so loud. Without fail a curl ends up fallen against his forehead, all mussed up from pushing his hands through it but a moment earlier. No matter how he flustered he is in the aftermath Emil is just as loud the next time he laughs, too eager and excitable to ever hold himself back.

Motivations - What motivates Emil Eckart Klein most?

Above all else Emil wants to protect his family, at any cost. He would give anything for them – himself, his humanity – if he must. At heart Emil wants to escape the harsh world they live in and run away with Ansel, but he couldn't live with himself if he put his desires before his duty.

Flaws - What flaws does Emil Eckart Klein have?

Emil wants so badly to be liked that he rarely stands up for himself or what he believes in. Even when conversations become hurtful he forces himself to quietly laugh along, fading into the background as best he can. Part of this is down to survivalism, having grown up in 1930s Germany Emil knows saying the wrong thing once might be enough to put him or his family in danger.

Prejudices - What prejudices does Emil Eckart Klein have?

Though Emil wants to believe people are good at heart, the brutal and totalitarian world he's grown up in taught him otherwise. Despite being friendly he is mistrustful in the very same breath, trapped in the instinctive belief that everyone he meets is out for themselves and would turn him in to the Gestapo without a second's hesitation.

Personality type - What personality type is Emil Eckart Klein?

Pets - What pets does Emil Eckart Klein have?

Krümel, 'Crumbs' in German, is a chocolate brown Rex kitten sprinkled with flecks of cream across her pelt. She started life as a stray but quickly wormed her way into the Kleins' house and hearts by catching mice in their shop and proudly presenting it to Mr. Klein each morning in exchange for scratches and snacks. Krümchen, as Emil calls her, is a spastic ball of energy and spends her days leaping from shelf to shelf in the family's shop she calls home. Emil likes to sneak her up to the apartment above their store at night so she can curl up by his side while he reads in bed.

Honestly, I can find nothing wrong with him. He is a very well written character. It really is amazing how in depth he is described. You did a wonderful job. He has a very good personality type. He sounds like he is adorable when he laughs. I love that he always has something for stray cats. No matter what it is. He seems like a very good character. You did a wonderful job in explaining him and keeping everything so it makes sense.

❝ Our house was overrun by partisan border guards. Dozens of them. My father was beaten, my mother was beaten, and this man, my father's friend, he was beaten. And I watched this man. Every time they hit him, he stood back up again. So they hit him harder. Still he got back to his feet. I think because of this they stopped the beating. They let him live. 'Stoikiy muzhik'. When Emil closes his eyes at night and longs for home he remembers evenings growing up, sat at the kitchen table watching his mother cook. He can’t be sure if it’s truly a memory or nostalgia idealizing his past like a film real, but he can vividly remember the pale golden sunlight that filled the room as the sunset, how the flecks of dust that floated through the air made his mother look like she had a halo. He remembers how she stood over the stove, softly humming along to the records that wafted in through the open window from a neighbor’s home, how graceful she was, how safe he felt. Smooth and polished like a stone from being turned over in his mind time and again, this small memory is Emil’s solace when all he can feel is empty and all he can hear is shots in the distance.

On the other hand, Emil is haunted by yet another memory, one still raw with pain. A memory that isn’t even one memory but many, all twisted together into one sick knot tied tightly in the pit of his stomach. Every morning his walk to school was littered with hateful rhetoric in the form of propaganda posters, some tacked upon the homes of his neighbors, others crumpled and mud stained at his feet. Each one was more disturbing than the last. No matter how far from home he goes or how strong he grows Emil has never been able to shed the distinct sense of being unwanted those posters left him with. The one he remembers the most, a moment still thick with pain like a hypertrophic scar, was hung in front of his school. That day Emil realized how different he was for the very first time, bitter tears rolling down his cheeks still chubby with baby fat as he studied it. “Die Weltpest”, it said, The Universal Plague. A grotesque caricature of a jew lumbered over Germany as women and children ran away in screaming terror. Though he tore it down the poster hung itself inside his head instead, lying in wait for his darkest moments to torment him, to prey on his doubts and desperation. These days Emil refuses to run from that memory any longer, turning the helpless grief he felt into the fuel he needs to keep fighting.

𝐒𝐞𝐱𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐎𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧? T𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐞𝐱𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥?
Emil isn't certain himself, in a world so censored he hasn't the vocabulary to articulate what exactly he feels. He finds women beautiful, intriguing, but feels nothing for them. For a long time Emil assumed this was how everyone felt, it wasn't until his best friend took his breath away that he finally understood the countless songs about love he grew up listening to. Even stealing the slightest of glances at another boy took all of Emil's courage, the idea of reaching out to one is terrifying. Emil tries not to dwell on sexuality in general, let alone his sexuality, but with all the propaganda the public is inundated with he can't help but be curious. What could possibly be so wrong with the butterflies in his stomach just because it was a boy who put them there? He watches the couples he encounters from the corner of his eye with an earnest awe, almost reverent in his curiosity. Deep down Emil longs simply to belong somewhere, to know what it feels like to be held and if kisses truly feel as wonderful as they look on the silver screen.

Though Emil is shy he is also eager – desperate for a sense of belonging, for intimacy. That said, Emil is deeply affectionate and sensitive, despite his curiosity surrounding sex he can't imagine sharing himself with anyone he didn't love.
