when he was younger, his sister had burned the house, killing him and her. he was dead for a year when death himself resurrected Caleb and took him as his son. Death had another son but killed him because the boy fell in love and got distracted. Caleb was taught never to fall in love. so he worked with death to kill people. eventually Caleb found a girl his age and fell in love with her pretty fucking quickly. they got together and avoided death together. death knows now and doesn't like her very much.
