Laurel's family was already apart of the community so she was raised in its teaching. Though not a bad kid her family used the teaching of the community as a weapon causing laurel to withdraw into herself and not talk for years afraid if she did she would be punished not only by her family but by the community. Though laurel withdrew into herself she made an alternate personality that was the perfect face for the community, taking on more responsibilities to avoid her family at all costs. because of her quiet nature as a child, she did not make any friends for years and was stunted socially, causing social anxiety, depression, and other mental disabilities to form in her place. When she opened up to her mother about her battle with depression she was rebuffed because in the community mental health issues were a form of weakness and not to be tolerated or acknowledged.
