"It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for – and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s longing. It doesn’t interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool – for love – for your dreams – for the adventure of being alive."
The Campaigner personality is a true free spirit. They are often the life of the party, but unlike types in the Explorer Role group, Campaigners are less interested in the sheer excitement and pleasure of the moment than they are in enjoying the social and emotional connections they make with others. Charming, independent, energetic and compassionate, the 7% of the population that they comprise can certainly be felt in any crowd.
Campaigner personality
You Can Change the World With Just an Idea
More than just sociable people-pleasers though, Campaigners, like all their Diplomat cousins, are shaped by their Intuitive (N) quality, allowing them to read between the lines with curiosity and energy. They tend to see life as a big, complex puzzle where everything is connected – but unlike Analyst personality types, who tend to see that puzzle as a series of systemic machinations, Campaigners see it through a prism of emotion, compassion and mysticism, and are always looking for a deeper meaning.
Campaigners are fiercely independent, and much more than stability and security, they crave creativity and freedom.
Many other types are likely to find these qualities irresistible, and if they’ve found a cause that sparks their imagination, Campaigners will bring an energy that oftentimes thrusts them into the spotlight, held up by their peers as a leader and a guru – but this isn’t always where independence-loving Campaigners want to be. Worse still if they find themselves beset by the administrative tasks and routine maintenance that can accompany a leadership position. Campaigners’ self-esteem is dependent on their ability to come up with original solutions, and they need to know that they have the freedom to be innovative – they can quickly lose patience or become dejected if they get trapped in a boring role.
Don’t Lose That ’Little Spark of Madness’
Luckily, Campaigners know how to relax, and they are perfectly capable of switching from a passionate, driven idealist in the workplace to that imaginative and enthusiastic free spirit on the dance floor, often with a suddenness that can surprise even their closest friends. Being in the mix also gives them a chance to connect emotionally with others, giving them cherished insight into what motivates their friends and colleagues. They believe that everyone should take the time to recognize and express their feelings, and their empathy and sociability make that a natural conversation topic.
The Campaigner personality type needs to be careful, however – if they rely too much on their intuition, assume or anticipate too much about a friend’s motivations, they can misread the signals and frustrate plans that a more straightforward approach would have made simple. This kind of social stress is the bugbear that keeps harmony-focused Diplomats awake at night. Campaigners are very emotional and sensitive, and when they step on someone’s toes, they both feel it.
Campaigners will spend a lot of time exploring social relationships, feelings and ideas before they find something that really rings true. But when they finally do find their place in the world, their imagination, empathy and courage are likely to produce incredible results.

The Ried lot owned any place they were in. The oldest sister Hannah, stubborn and courageous, Claire was the smartest, often taught and helped the other siblings with school work, Ella had more common sense than logic based smarts, very extroverted, then there was the first son and bastard Alastair, witty tongue and dark humour would joke his way out of most trouble. Finally, baby Grace, of whom Alastair adored and cared for the most out of all the siblings. Only a few years apart, the five siblings would fight for and against each other constantly. However, Alastair hardly ever threw a punch. Unlike his sisters, his words often hit harder than any swing, but he did learn how to do so if he needed to from Hannah.
Alastair was told from a young age that he had a different father to his sisters, even little Grace. All of his siblings belonged to his mother's ex-husband, while he was born from a one night stand. Alastair never minded this, and never saw his sisters as anything other than full, however, he was always curious about his Father, but never wanted to ask.
Growing up, Alastair quickly realised his attraction for men, and first came out to his oldest sister Hannah. After this, he easily told the rest and his mother, who accepted him for who he is.
The day Alastair (12) met Aidan was the first time that he took the bus. He was feeling lost, having no idea what he would do after school. He just wanted to get away, and so there he was, sat at the same bus stop as Aidan. After half an hour of silence, Aidan finally said, "Why are pineapples called pineapples?". One rant about pineapples later, Alastair invited Aidan for tea, and they never caught that bus. It turned out Aidan had a similar plan to just leave for a bit, but instead, they stayed together. It turned out that Aidan was from a nearby school and lived only a few roads away. They stayed together for another four years. At 16, Aidan went to learn health and social care at college, while Alastair got a job mucking out stables, and caring for horses.
While there, he was offered a better job, less work but far more pay. All he had to do was deliver some packages now and then. After a few months, Alastair looked inside the package to find drugs. Each package generally had a different type. LSD, Morphine and weed were the most common. With his first paycheck, Alastair bought Aidan a border collie called Domino.
One day, Aidan found out. When he calmed down, he shared the idea of stealing some to just try it, but Alastair was against it. Wanting to make Aidan happy, Alastair bought some morphine and they tried it.
After the first two weeks, they knew they were addicted. Aidan didn't care about college anymore, and Alastair hardly ever delivered packages. Instead, they used what they had to buy and use. The following is from the bag thief role play that I used to tell this in the first person as Alastair:
"Morphine feels like… It's like when you fall back in your chair. For a split second, before the fear hits, you're just there, hanging in the air. Nothing hurts. Nothing hurts and, you can't even think about it. Only, with morphine, it's also like somebody's sat on your chest, holding you. All you know is that it feels good, and you don't want anything to change. Then the chair falls." I glare at the bag, "All I could think once I got up was that I had to share it with…" I stop walking, chewing on my bottom lip, tears boiling in my eyes. My chest feels like it's going to explode. My eyes don't move from the bag, "I'd been stealing the needles for weeks. Trying to be careful. Two a every few days. After a while, it turned into a game, who would fall first?" I take a bigger drink, burning my mouth once more, "He had the idea of us doing it at the same time, since I normally did his, then my own. Told me that he'd seen me do it enough. It'd be fine." I chuckle, "It'd be fine…" Tears make small holes in the snow around my feet. "I woke up, but he didn't. I waited, laughing, saying how he'd won. He looked… peaceful. When I finally realised that he had gone, I called an ambulance. Told them where we are, what I'd done, everything but when they finally asked my name I just… I hung up. Ran. Ran past the sound of sirens and the flashing red and blue. Just kept running."
During this, Domino ran after Alastair, and so they stuck together. In fear of being arrested, despite loving Aidan, Alastair got on a bus with Domino and left.
While homeless, he once sat at a bus stop where a man sat near him. He started a conversation, noticing how young Alastair is. Allie instantly recognised him. The photo his Mum had of him always lingered in his back pocket. It was his Dad. (Convo on phone notes, between Alastair and Alexander)
"You know, I don't have a Dad."
"Oh- I'm sorry, I didn't mean to-"
"No-no don't worry it's nothing like-... Well he never knew about me. I remember my Mum showing me a picture of him when I was around thirteen? Let me keep it. I remember telling her I didn't want a picture of a stranger, cause that's all I wanted to see him as. I didn't want to make her feel like she wasn't enough, you know? Not his fault, but still.
Anyway.
I kept it.
Kept it in my wallet.
Still got it in the caravan."
Alexander stayed quiet, looking at Alastair with those sad eyes.
"Anyway... Last year, before all of this... Shit, I was just sat at this bus stop when this guy runs under the shelter. It was raining pretty bad, and he was laughing so hard it made me giggle. Only when he sat down, shaking the water from his coat, did I notice it was him. I just, knew. I stared at him, wanting to cry haha. So we started talking like any two strangers would, and I was so tempted. Planning and thinking of different ways I could tell him. Just give him the picture, I thought, Just give it to him. Then my body just froze. He told me about how he had this family, showing me pictures of these two little boys, Harry and Ethan. Both were just kids, maybe six? Twins. Then he was off haha, telling me a thousand stories about them and his wife Clara. Finally he just looked at me and said, "How the hell did a good kid like you end up like this huh?" He was smiling, but he was sad.
I imagined telling him everything. Hugging him and just, letting him be my Dad. Then I thought of those boys, my brothers. If I did, then their lives would change. His wife's life would change. His life would change. And he looked so happy. I just...
"Ah you know, bad decisions and too many risks haha." I said, rubbing my head.
We talked a bit more about random things, and then he caught his bus to go home, and I walked back to this place I'd been sleeping where Domino was."
Alastair took a deep breath, looking straight into Alex's eyes,
"I will regret that day for the rest of my life, and in honesty, it was probably the only good thing I ever did. I can never change that."
Alastair smiled a bit, nodding his head, "Saying that, he's probably dead now so I guess none of it matters anymore. But you're not happy, or safe, and you can do something about that like I should have. You're not alone anymore and you don't have to let yourself think that anymore, okay?"
After travelling to England, from Ireland, Alastair kept moving from town to town. He was near Cleethorpes when the machines were released (story plot related). After hiding for a few months, he eventually found a motor van with Max and Katie inside. A few weeks later they found Shazi. When trying to venture and find supplies, Alastair found and stole the truck with Alex in, which is where we find him.
