His family died when he was very young, and he left town fearing persecution for being a shapeshifter. Upon stumbling upon the boy, he does some HTTYD stuff and they adopt him. He learns their language and finds that they're not at all the savage beasts people made them to be, and in fact they are the sources of magic.
They train him in the arts of magic and combat (he only practices against Ue tho, so that doesn't work well for him in the future but oh well), until one day they all disappear.
He joins the Fen as soon as it's established, and a few years later he's found by the last of the Ue. They tell him the Ue left for their ancestral home, whose call was too strong, and hand him a necklace which they say is the 'gate' before finally submitting to the call themselves.
He proposes a search for the gate and the Ue to the IMT, revealing everything from his past including his shifting abilities. Their stigma of shifters and Ue as little other than war beasts leads them to believe that he's lying and simply wants power, or works for a higher power.
A Champion manages to trap him in stone, and he's locked away under the island and eventually forgotten. That is, until one day, when he finally wakes.

• His hair naturally grows until the neck partway. He partakes in the ancient tradition of only cutting your hair when you've been defeated in something, so he cuts it when he's first released. We see this continue throughout the series when he loses.
