Lysandra's parents moved to Ancalen before she was born, finding themselves welcome amongst their elven kin. But the island isn't as idyllic as many believe; her mother died in childbirth, and her father abandoned her afterwards unable to cope with the loss and look at the child that would just be a constant reminder of the woman he loved.

Other elves took her in, then sold her to the vampires in Hem Lodir as a blood bag. Mairi Mathis took her in and raised her, and when she was an adult Lysandra was offered the choice to become a vampire or continue her mortal existence. She chose vampire, and has severed Mairi ever since as the second in command for The Pearl Court.
