Rolan was born to the elves of Ancalen and grew up helping with their drug trade. While the drugs the elves enjoy aren't illegal on the island they are in the wider world, leaving many elves born there either not wanting to leave or knowing they'll have a hard time getting the various things they're used to.

Having this kind of attitude present for most of his life, Rolan had an idea; contact the Rogue's Guild to see if they'd be interested in helping smuggle the drugs to Firebend for the elven population there and for distribution into the wider world. The guild agreed, and Rolan left the island to be the official liaison between the elves and the guild. He's served in that position ever since, making sure orders get back to Ancalen and that the elves in Firebend are well stocked before the shipments head off to other parts of the world.
